God that reply has made me think of a potential headliner next year . The fact they have a large stadium tour of their own may stop it happening but in reality they sell out anything they are at in seconds so unfortunately its possible

Seriously doubt a Simon Cowell act will ever have a half-decent slot at a major UK festival. Even SME aren't that much of a sell-out, surely.

Take That will headline either Glasto or V before 1D do the latter, at the very least.

1D wouldn't headline because the majority of the fans would need to be in bed at the headline slot time

Sorry, when I said 'Simon Cowell act' I meant X Factor or BGT-graduates. And I don't think Olly has had a significant slot, has he? Halfway up the main stage at V isn't what I'd call a significant slot, and that's the best slot I can think of him being given.

V still have a minimal amount of reputation to maintain with the indie rock crowd, booking 1D to headline would demolish that and it would never be recovered.

Would only work if all tickets were sold before the lineup. 60-80,000 day tickets would go on their fans (and parents!) so by that point they may as well be headlining the main stage

One direction would have been acceptable a few years ago whenever they started if they were somewhere like mid day on 4Music or arena or futures. That way their fans could see them and still have their bed time story :-P too big for arena and not credible enough for headlining 4Music

They're too big to play any slot except headline, sub at a very strong push. But they also aren't credible enough to play any slot at all. Therefore it will never happen, so everyone can stop bringing up 1D.
