Argos has Nokia phones for £9.99 at the moment - one of those plus a couple of £1 spare batteries off eBay should sort you for phoning and texting all weekend.

Bear in mind when packing your £500+ iPhone that it probably doesn't fall under the common sense guidance of 'don't take anything you can't afford to lose'. I say this as someone who is umbilically attached to my iPhone - it comes everywhere with me but there's no way in the world I'd bring it to a muddy farm full of mashed people (myself included) - for Glasto it stays at home and the £10 PAYG Nokia comes with.

Ah I get you. I have it insured anyway. Main issue is that the sim is tiny in the iphone 5 and not transferrable. I'd have to buy a phone AND a sim to use in it.

I'd say spare batteries or portable chargers are the best bet, I camped near chill & charge in 2010 and the queue was always horrendous don't get why anyone would waste their time doing that.

I keep an old phone on me and a £10 brick phone in the lock up. Just make sure you have transfered any important numbers to the new phone, I usually also keep a bit of paper somewhere safe with those numbers written on just incase I am totally phoneless and need to get in touch.

I've got to agree with this.

The common thought on this forum is that people with phones/internet just update their Facebook statuses to show off by being at Glastonbury. To me, it's about the opposite. While it's good to get away from work etc, I still like to know what's going on in the outside world. Sport is just as important to me as the festival so I like to know what is happening during the week.

I have no problem saying that I use facebook and twitter when I'm doing anything I'm happy or excited about for the rest of the year. I don't know why I would suddenly decide that i don't want to say anything on there about my very favourite thing!

I even like to post on this forum when I'm there - especially in the first couple of days about things like the condition of the site, where there's space to camp (or not), traffic....and yes, just a smug "We're here!!!!"

I like to have a quick check of the internet in the morning in the tent, during that time when I'm trying to get my head together to actually get dressed.

That said, I have never spent time charging my phone - that would be a waste of Glastonbury. I take a spare battery, I don't turn the phone on unless I want it for something specific, and I take an old phone to switch to for the rest of the weekend when it finally dies which is usually sometime on Sunday. The smartphone then goes in the lockups for the remainder. I find that's a decent middle ground between not having my phone and being run by it.

I can remember being totally cut off for the weekend, and if you lost someone then the only way to find them again was the meeting point, and those times certainly had their own charm, but now it is 2012 and I have a phone which can link me with people on a whole range of levels, and I don't believe it's anti-Glastonbury for me to use it.

This must be an age thing - I really can't get used to it being 2013 at all! It's never taken me this long on a change of year before! The other day i sent an email to each of my staff to remind them of clients they hadn't seen in 2012 - it caused total panic!

Anyway - back to phones. I was just reminded of one of my favourite ever phone quotes on twitter.

This year I've got a new phone the Galaxy S3 which has removable battery so will probably take that with some spares.

The main reason for needing a phone is to keep in touch with my wife and kids back home

This is still a country with some the most extreme levels of poverty in the world.

I would reckon not even 1 in 10 people in India have regular access to a computer

Ok deffo taking my old phone, charged it up and left it on since I started this thread and it still has 5bar battery!! I know I've not used it, but It's been on for about 5 days. That's good enough for me. Should last me the whole of Glastonbury if I turn it off at night time

smart phones... lots of little, often useless steps forward, one massive step back (the battery life)

the newer the phone, the less useful it is for the one thing it's supposed to do, make phone calls. I love my smart phone for everything apart from it's ability to make phone calls
