Revive the dance village.

This is my first post on this forum. I have been reading past posts for a number of weeks now because December at work is so quiet I think I’m back to May 2010 and has kept me entertained.

I have attended 3 Glastonbury festivals so far in 05, 09 &11. At each festival it has rained running up to the weekend then turned into a glorious Sat and Sun so I’m imagining that it will happen for my fourth festival in 2013 (sorry if it does and don’t blame me) but I do hope to be proved wrong and it's sunny all week long.

I have read in previous posts that the dance village doesn't seem to work anymore. I can see what people are talking about. I was wondering if it’s down to the dj choice or lack of knowledge of the genre of music the dj’s are going to play. I used to be a massive raver; I’ve been to Ibiza more times than I can remember and used to travel the country going to different events/clubs etc. When I read the line up I see a list of dj’s names, I recognize a few, but mainly it’s just names that I have never heard of. I admit I hung up my dancing shoes a number of years ago, and I realize things move on, so these dj’s might be the latest and best but I don’t know what genre they play and with everything else happening on site I can’t be bothered to go and find out. Would it be better to have established nights/venues take over the tents for a day so people know that it’s going to be Techno in that tent, House in that, Trance in that on Friday, then Saturday some different genres and likewise on Sunday. At the minute the line up’s are all over the place, Kesha was on before Carl Cox at the last festival, What The F##K!! A bit more clarity might help it along? Also, why not book some of the old “superstar dj’s” that don’t have any work now, get them cheap I would have thought and pull in some of the older ravers.

I know the music being shut off at 12.00 (ish) is a major issue because of the noise, why not buy the all of the village that is affected some Bose noise canceling head phones? I would be chuffed to get some of them for nothing!! LOL. I think a 2 or 3am finish would do, the more hardcore then could head off to the other side of the site to rave until the sun comes up

I have had a look at the line up from 2011 and the days tended to be fairly genre specific apart from having some live acts in the tents to perhaps make up for the shortfall of space having got rid of the Queens Head:-

East Dance - Friday

Started off with live acts and then went into Carl Cox and Fatboy Slim

Oxlyers in West - Friday

Started off with live acts and then had a run of Future Garage/House acts with a close with Erol and Annie Mac who play similar styles of multi-genre house, techno etc

Wow Stage - Friday

From Greg Wilson onwards its just disco house

East Dance - Saturday

Urban / Grime artists throughout the day

Oxlyers in West - Saturday

Live acts followed by Breaks and then Tech House (genres not too distant in terms of BPM/Sound)

Wow Stage - Saturday

Mix of live acts and Dubstep/D'n'B DJ's throughout the day

East Dance - Sunday

Mainly straight up house in various guises all day some relatively big DJ's at the start of the day and then ended with some big DJ's as well

Oxlyers in West

Same formula - live acts at the start of the day and then dubstep/D'n'B in the evening

Wow Stage - Sunday

A mixture of various leftfield electronica acts who play a varied number of genres in their sets with the Rebel Rave (deep house) closing

I think that they do a pretty good job now in terms of how they programme the tents and it makes sense to utilise the tents for live acts (with certain electronic leanings) throughout the day and then bring the DJ's on in the evenings - having been there in 2010 I spent a lot of time on the Friday in there and it would be great to see it developed into a viable late-ish night alternative, I seem to recall it being open until about 1am? But with the sound restrictions I think it's going to be tough to really develop it beyond the current constraints.

lack of knowledge ? if you cant be bothered to find out whats on. do you expect to just turn up and be entertained?

just wander around aimlessly trying to find something you like?............thats why you get handed a programme at entry and have all day to read it.!

maybe its not what it used to be coz theres a bunch of numbnuts wandering around looking for their personal taste.

I wander about aimlessly myself sometimes but that's the times when i know there's nothing on i'm particularly interested in.

if its cool to just walk about with no clue whats on anywhere, then i'm happy to stay uncool..

point i was trying to make is: someone is saying an area doesn't work because of lack of knowledge of what the dj is going to play. then admits himself that he cant be bothered to find out what is playing when he goes there?

if you want to waste your money by not knowing whats on anywhere that's fine, but I don't think you can complain there's nothing on you like when you get there.

If they have particular genres in the same tent all night....lets say trance for instance ...all that will happen is: that tent will be full for the duration of people that like trance music and nobody else will get in it.

I find the thought of stumbling across a good dj i've never heard slightly less appealing than a live band so i'm less likely to wander there - If the area was a bit more creatively designed with more interesting venues it might be a more attractive option.

I like dance music but there aren't many acts i'd walk across the site from elsewhere to see individually. However if i knew there was a tent playing, say french electro (curated by an artist or all on ed banger etc) on the friday i'd definitely pop in at some point and probably stay for a couple of hours. They don't need genre titles as such though - we're all perfectly capable of reading (and researching) line-ups, especially if they've got a bit more logic and cohesion to them.

if i happen to walk by the dance village or go in a tent and hear something I don't know but like it (gold panda ) then it's a a little gem....but before the festival I do try and look up the acts in the dance village as a lot of the time I haven't heard of most of them - BUT a quick youtube search play a bit of a video for each and get an idea whether you'll like them or not!! so at least I have a vague idea of what I might like/not :)
