I was reminded by something on TV this morning about a gadget (see below) I've fancied for a while, so thought I'd start a thread to see what we think are the best toys and gadgets...

---------------------------

I've fancied one of these since I saw it on Top Gear

It's called the AR.Drone, and it's a self-stabilising 'helicopter' which is controlled via an app on an iPhone or Android device.

When I looked at them before I discovered that my old android phone wouldn't run the app. Now when I've remembered about this toy I have a nice shiny Nexus 7 so could buy one and have some fun.

I'm exceedingly tempted .... but for just now i'm keeping my wallet shut. I reckon there's a big chance I might crack before xmas tho.

bit expensive that one , theres a cheaper one with great reviews .

yeah, but it doesn't have the camera, and neither does it has the auto-stabilise feature, or ability to fly outdoors.

My house is already full of dead, half dead, and working 'copters not much different to that one in its flying abilities (including a big petrol powered monster that would take your head off), so I don't really need another standard copter ... tho I have been toying with the idea of getting that one for my kid.

I'd like one of those Neil, but its not a patch on this bastard of a thing.

I got into flying cos one day I had the mad idea of filming festivals from the air with remote controlled flying things ... and the reality is that to get good pics I'd need something like that. Due to a combination of the price of that sort of kit, plus the realisation that it could never be an entirely safe thing to do with lots of people around ... and having the shakes after 3 days on the piss the first time I tried flying a copter from the edge of a festival site  .... it was an idea I soon gave up on, but I'd got the flying bug anyway.

I'm amazed how well that handles the kick-back from the gun.
