a third 'alternative' headliner?

Was just wondering what anyone thought about a third, somewhat 'alternative' headliner for 2013, and if it was to happen who could it be and who would you want it to be. Not an alternative act in terms of music, but as a headliner for the festival e.g. Lady Gaga, Kanye/Jay-Z etc.

If it was to happen my money would be on The Stones, Radiohead and Gaga.

Watch The Throne would be amazing but way too soon for Jay-Z to come back (probably never will). Kanye on his own would do.

I don't see why Gaga and Kanye West are considered 'alternative' headline acts, Glasto has been moving in this direction for years and a headliner like that wouldn't be surprising at all. Metallica/Pearl Jam/Green Day would be an alternative to the norm, not Gaga and Kanye West.

Probably because Gaga and Jay-Z are no longer one end of the spectrum, they're rapidly becoming the norm, which means that the likes of Metallica are probably even further away than they were.

For a festival that has in recent years booked Kylie, Beyonce and Jay Z to headline and has had Scissor Sisters, Shakira, Amy Winehouse and Lilly Allen playing high up on the Pyramid I can't see how having Gaga or Kanye West be be a surprising or 'alternative' choice.

2004 - All three

So out of the last nine festivals, twenty out of the last twenty seven headliners have been along those lines.

For that reason, although something like Arcade Fire, Radiohead and Fleetwood Mac would be perfect on paper for me, I'd much prefer them to branch out, even if it is a headliner that I don't like.

I think we've gone off on a tangent somewhere, I'm not sure what that has to do with me saying that a pop act like Gaga or Kanye West wouldn't be a leftfield or alternative option given that Beyonce and Jay-Z have headlined recently.

Are you saying that Lady Gaga would be a surprising choice?

Compared to the above I would. I was responding to you saying Glasto usually has the type of Kanye/Gaga act, which while I'd agree Glasto, the same with most major fests, usually has pop acts, they're normally type as above.

I didn't say Glasto 'usually' has that type of act at all. I didn't even use the word usually.

I said that Gaga or Kanye West wouldn't be much of an alternative/surprise/leftfield choice for headliner because that type of act has become more and more common on the Pyramid stage. Maybe not as popular as 'white boy guitar' but still prevalent enough not to be a surprise, and that a genuine alternative for Glasto would be someone like Metallica/Pearl Jam/Green Day.

Yeah I guess that would explain the disagreement. By 'the norm' I didn't necessarily mean the most common, just that it isn't unusual. For me behind 'white boy guitar' stuff like Gaga and Kanye is the most likely to the point that it isn't surprising any more, where as having a dance or rock headliner would be a major curveball and true 'alternative'.

Metallica or Iron Maiden would be awesome, does anyone think Aerosmith or Led Zep could do it!! More classic rock/metal at Glasto for me I think.

I think as a proper alternative headliner it would have to be one end of the " musical spectrum" or the other, for example, Big dance act, Daft Punk? not sure about recent acts, and then a classic rock act, Metallica, Maiden, Aerosmith...

I read that Michael eavis was looking at booking a heavier rock or metal act but said probably not next year (13) rage against the machine were mentioned by him in the same article
