Looks like the always-on internet connection thing might be real. If so, I'm not buying one.

Meh, that article seems to indicate a more more registered with xbox live/connect to the net every now and again type affair?

And I doubt that will bother most people, as most consoles are hooked up to the net these days and if its something to cut the pre-owned market, I could see a lot of developers/publishers doing exclusives on Xbox 360.

My guess is, it will be optional for developers to put in something always on net/not trading games in.

"After playing Skyward Sword, programmer Hugues Johnson decided that the amount of hand holding in games was getting ridiculous. He decided to let out some steam by mocking today's gaming norms."

 All make good points, but the first one really sums up games these days.

The new thread shouldn't mention any 'gen' or 'consoles' because the way gaming is now and is going it is really varied. You have:

Yeah but:

1. consoles and PCs PC games seem to follow consoles anyway mostly. Especially the biggies.

2. handheld consoles As above consoles really

3. mobile phone and tablet gaming Kills about 5 minutes while traveling, mostly a way to get kids to accidentally purchase expensive DLC. (Take the Iron Man 3 game, there are 3 different maps that are fun to fly around but same basic gameplay on each one ...to unlock all the armors, you can take ages to earn them or purchase them for 70 quid..)

4. internet gaming Is this really a separate platform? :P

:P

I am not that fussed actually. That's more a rant towards mobile games tbh :P

and you would be quite happy if your internet went down for 4 days, and you couldnt even switch your xbox on because of it?

or you have had 20+ attempts at beating a particularly infuriating stage of a game, you finally do it, and just as you do - your router drops your connection (which many peoples do) and the xbox kicks you back to the dashboard main menu?

It wouldn't bother me that much I spose...mind its been a while since I've been obsessive about it.

The 2nd point, it's just not going to work that literally, if your connection drops it be something like 15/30 minutes of play so you can get to the next checkpoint. (Like most implementations.)

1. hence its utterly unnecessary, intrusive, and will turn people away from buying the console. you may not be obsessive, but I can assure you - millions are. Imagine if it went down over a COD launch or something? Kids would be rioting in the streets. Its entirely about DRM and nothing else. and there are other ways.

I got pissed off yesterday because I couldnt download a tiny bit of DLC for Far Cry 3 without quitting right back to the dashboard, as the game's "always online" portion stops stuff downloading in the background.

2. Glad you know exactly how its going to be implemented.

Just bought Blood Dragon, got a 9/10 on Eurogamer - which is plenty good enough for me. 8 hours of campaign apparently. And you dont even need FC3 to play it, its a complete standalone.

Just need to get the missus to fire up the xbox at home and it will be downloaded when I get there!

I can see the bad points, it just doesn't bother me /seem much of a problem for the vast majority , the vast majority of the time.

Anyway its pointless over arguing its merits and problems until they actually announce always online and how exactly its going to work. I am still going guess it will be optional to implement for each game, so Microsoft can blame EA etc. for it :P

Pre-ordered on steam last night for the PC (£11.99), shall also be enjoying this tonight.

Blood Dragon is brilliant. I was a bit unsure at the start, but by the end I was loving every second of it. Completely over the top, great fun, brilliantly cheesy 80s music, and very funny too. My only criticism is that it was way too short. I was concentrating more on the missions than the garrisons and before I knew it I had finished it. I am definitely going back to finish off all the garrisons though.

Some of the one liners are brilliant too. "He said 'blow me', so I did!" "Time to ride shotgun!" "I'm on fire! And so is he!"
