Kendal Calling 2013

I honestly think they need to concentrate on getting the stage numbers/locations right if they are wanting things to grow.

Main Stage, Calling Out, Chai Wallahs & Glow were in the right locations (although Calling Out needed more marketing & things around it)

Kopperberg Cube - what was that about? How could that be classed as a stage (think it had been built from a couple of Johnny's pallets!)? Too much sound bleed from it.

House Party - too close to Kopperberg

Soap Box - did anyone actually go in there?

Woodland stage - good idea, just badly marketed

Sometimes 'less is more'

Between us I'm sure we can make sure we get you there mate! Couple of my mates missed out this morning as well. Even if you miss the next sale there was enough people flogging them at face value on Facebook last year to suggest you can avoid the scalping arseholes on Ebay.

I'm going to go for 10 bands who I sort of want to play, but I'd sure the budget wouldn't stretch to them all !

New Order

Primals

Edwyn Collins

The Vaccines

Pixies

The Wedding Present

The Vaselines

The Wind Up Birds

Alt-J

King Creosote

I'll leave Morrissey out of my 10 cos they'd probably have to make the site veggie-exclusive for the day, and I like my breakfast bacon sarnies too much

Edit : After re-looking, I thing KC COULD afford them all !

You fancy a bit of a friendly competition ? We each choose 10 bands or groups we think will play, the one with the most bands right gets a couple of free pints off anyone else who enters. You can change your list any time until the 31st december, whoever is on your list on 31st December are your picks.

The choices aren't who you want to play but who you think will play...

EDIT : ^^^^^^^^^ Don`t know why the quote bit didn`t work ? but this was part of Ramragons original post. I think I broke it by cheating with more than 10 selections....sorry !

Right, just to be awkward I`m going with my squad that I will reduce to my 10 defo`s by deadline day :

1. Hot Chip

2. Madness

3. Primal Scream

4. Charlatans

5. Alabama Shakes

6. Jake Bugg

7. P.I.L.

8. Glasvegas

9. Ocean Colour Scene

10. Deacon Blue

11. Cast

12. Newton Faulkner

13. The Levellers

14. Bad Manners

15. The Big Pink

16. King Charles

17. Kassidy

You must have been bored when the match was on the other day cos there's a lot of thought gone in to that, could imagine any of them appearing, never really thought of madness before but if they could afford them it'd be an ideal setting for em. Alabama Shakes would be great as well.

Glasvegas seem to have totally fallen from grace since the hype machine 4 years ago, playing the academy 2 with their latest tour, not even main stage academy

Your right about Glasvegas. They were reduced to playing for free last year in the middle of Glasgow. Seen buskers with bigger crowds. Shame really but there is talent in there somewhere so you never know. Perhaps a bit less Buckfast !

Heard on the wind that Wickerman were quoted £90,000 for Madness 2 years ago but since then they have played Carlisle racecourse and must have banked a few quid from the Queens doo etc. New album out so wouldn`t rule them out.

What do we reckon Kendal offer their Headliners ??

I`d guess it must be £50,000 plus. Anyone fancy puting a band together !

I am loving your work fella. Not fussed about Alt J but I know the Kendal guys saw them and loved them so might be a possibility. The Pixies would be amazing! Chuck in Nick Cave, Public Enemy and Jimmy Cliff and that would be a phenomenal weekend.

Thought I might have seen you at the Sturdy Records compilation launch in Leeds at the weekend. Wind-Up Birds were brilliant (obviously!) but loads of other really good stuff on...Racket Ball, The French Defence, Post War Glamour Girls, The Seven Inches. Loqui...

Amazing that one little label has so many great bands...

I saw the Sturdy thing, but we were seeing Cud and Carter on the friday night, and my ears were still ringing on sunday. Did you get the ace new WUB t shirt? One for you to look at for next year is the Long Division festival around Wakefield. Wind Up Birds likely to play, but loads of good Leeds/Sturdy stuff, and its a one day fest based in pubs and rooms, so no weather worries

Saw Cud a couple of years ago...spent most the night holding an ice pack on the leg of my friend's friends lesbian partners ankle...quite possibly the only time I'll ever get to use that sentence.

Yeah...love the t-shirt. Was gonna wear it to the gig but as given the etiquette is not to wear the t-shirt of the band you're going to see at their gig decided against it (couldn't decide if this was a gig or a one day festival, it would have been acceptable if it was the latter). Only worn it a couple of times so far, a woman at work asked me not to wear it again as the mask scared her, and some bloke shouted at me as I went into the pub 'Thats a fookin' Scouse t-shirt if ever I saw one!'.

Anybody got Carter down on their list of possibles for Kendal??

    • Another note, if I didn't mention the food in the arena for main stage is right at the back. Bands wise they do very well for but as a festival so far they pros are outweighed quite heavily currently for me.
    • On another note for RIP as an event, there is some good things but there are so many things people going to UK festivals would hate and how far behind they are.  Consistent network and water, beer and pretzel like food is brought around to buy in the crowds. Topping up on the wristband is good. The camping and food arrangement is not good, you really need cooking kit. Water points inside the arena are bonkers, water points in camping are a faff unless you are close enough in general camp. Merch stands are crazy. You MASSIVELY need to think about your lidl shop for camping and try and do it so you've one stop. It's definitely worth it getting to a camping shop here, picking up a rolley between your mates and stacking it for the walk back....lidl is cheap though, not hard getting in but Thursday queues getting in and into the camping is mad. You have to register first for a wristband as well leaving any bigger bags behind so pull to a side if only two and do it separately. I was joining a WhatsApp group for solo camp so went with the flow but I've learnt. Had it been me or just two my tent would have been down much quicker.  Big final note, I got a fresh and black 3 man from decathlon before coming and put in bigger suitcase with my airbed and sleeping bag...do this. Take a smaller option for your clothes. If you go to Munich first, book your train to Nuremberg as far in advance as you can....very important!....it hikes crazy. Probably bettee overall for baggage sizes to do BA both ways but you do then need to go back to Munich after too. Use the B&B hotel hbf the night before....its very nice, comfortable, cheap and within 10 minutes of the station which also serves as a transport stop 15 minutes from the registration.  Get up literally like 5am with everything back the night before, shower and go. Transport is free anyway for festival ticket holders during the duration.  Would I just choose to travel in each day and back to a hotel?, on the basis of sleep and getting accommodation cheap enough for 3 nights i might just do especially if I picked the ticket up early enough. It doesn't feel like a festival in a normal sense....unless you are in general yoi have to exit on the paths outside the camping to walk down and in which also applies for getting water so have a stock up. Toilets are in the camping.
