Primal Scream is another I like. Although if you didn't know the band then you'd think they were thrash metal, not ecstasy drenched love in music like they started out as.

As for bad names.... Pet Shop Boys. Seriously. WTF?

The Beatles is a really bad name as well, they're excused though.

Starting out the two called themselves West End, because of their love of London's West End, but later they came up with the name Pet Shop Boys, derived from friends of theirs who worked in a pet shop in Ealing.

That explains where they got the name from but not the why!

And I've always liked band names that work as initials, e.g. PWEI, KMFDM, KLF. Actually, have to say Pop Will Eat Itself is a damn fine band name, and gave rise to a truly great photo caption in NME once that would be a great name for a tribute band - Pop Will Shit Itself.

Electric Prunes was another great band name, although maybe I'm biased because they were one of the first West Coast bands I saw live.

Oh and Jefferson Airplane

At the time they seemed quite way out but these days they look like well scrubbed young kids.

It comes from, if my memory of 80s indie trivia serves me right, from the opening line of a Jamie Wednesday (an early iteration of Carter USM) review in the music press that started 'One day, Pop will eat itself'
