They're reporting the facts of what happened. No one is joining things up to look at what the effect was, and how it might have served a bigger purpose.

But that email is damning. It says the police & courts were going to take a particular line of action in the prosecution which they didn't actually take in the end, despite claiming to have pretty solid evidence.

Which begs the question: why not? Who got at the police &/or CPS to enable things to be toned down?

Everything now is suggesting to me that this is about far more than just journos wanting a story and News Intl wanting sales. It's looking like the exorcising of power to achieve specific things, to put people into power and to keep others out.

I didn't think Gove could be much more of a c**t than I already thought he was, but that article has proved me wrong.
