Let the debate begin....

My opinion.....A shocking piece of racist, patronising, misinformed shit...Daily Mail scouts must be getting excited...

....."Moreover, while Glastonbury has always been, ahem, "predominantly white", it had previously featured major black artists (De la Soul, Cypress Hill) without this level of fuss.

Cypress Hill Barbara are Latino heritage....

Whatever I thought before, during or after Jay Z's slot, it had nothing to with him being black.

Shes a bit of a wind up merchant is Ellen. Always picks "controversial" subject material but says very little. It’s a nothing article really. Why are people still talking about Noel Gallagher and the “not having that” comment? Insanity!!

Also – Jay Z is “the sound of the future”? :lol::lol::lol:

How does that work? Doing a watered down industry friendly version of what NWA did 20 years ago?

heh that is a bad article. I dont mind some of her stuff sometimes, but that is utter garbage.

As someone eloquently says in the comments:

"LOL WTF! It isn't that Jay-Z is black or hip-hop, it is that Jay-Z is SH*T. And it is not fair to blame the black community for j-z, he is hardly authentic black hip-hop he is pop music for 12 year olds."

Indeed. There would have been just as much uproar if that tit eminem had been booked.

It is not a black/white issue, it is a shit music/good music issue.

Utter Bilge.

booking Jay-z was a masterstroke that helped the festival reinvent itself.

A work of PR genius that got it in the public domain right up to the first day - and ever since the place has sold out in eight hours. Say what you like about the Eavii, but they're no mugs...

as for Predominantly white;

From Wikipedia:

1983

* The Beat

* Marillion

* Curtis Mayfield

* UB40

* Dennis Brown, with Aswad as backup band

* Melanie

* Alexis Korner

* Aswad

* King Sunny Ade & His African Beats

Glasto 'predominantly white' - yes and no. There's always been a fair proportion of black/non-white performers but the audience is still predominantly white.

But I suspect that Glasto is a reasonable reflection of both musical tastes and the general population demographic of the UK. The average age of Glasto goers is rising, as is the average age of the UK population as a whole.

The big mistake in the article was to judge Glasto by Pyramid Stage Headliners. A lot of Glasto goers will possibly only see a handul of Pyramid stage performers, instead taking in the diversity that's offered on the 16 or so other stages where there's usually something for everyone. And, as we all keep saying, Glasto isn't just about the music.
