I'm just about to go away for the weekend. I have a danio in my fish tank that is on its last legs, its probably only got a day max left to live.

If i leave it in the tank it will most probably die while I'm away and start to release nasty toxins into the water, further it will get eaten by the other fish ... a nasty demise. Then again it might have a miracle recovery and blossom once more (although this is very unlikely)

Or do I flush it down the toilet while its still alive ...

tough one. What do you think?

Barry Fish, Any suggestions?

Its fate will be decided based on the poll at 16:45pm

I keep fish myself. Leave it in the tank with treatment..... or separate it into another tank with treatment... Whatever is killing this fish is possibly effecting the other fish so they will need treatment as well

Flushing it down the toliet while it is alive is about the most evil thing you could do :( Its a fecking life...

5co77ie's right about the freezer idea.

This was the info we gave out at the Australian Museum when informing enquirers about how to dispose of invertebrates in as nice a way as possible they wanted identifying without squashing them.

Just pop it in a bag if you must and then pop it in the freezer. Quite how its going to disturb anything else in the freezer is beyond me.

BUT how DO you know its on its last legs. It might surprise you when you return and be happily still swimming around. The time you are away, there wont be a massive toxin build up anyway I shouldnt think. You say it will get eaten by the other fishes and a horrid demise? Surely the fish will be dead when it gets nibbled on by its tank mates and wont notice the cannibalism?

But it sounds like moving it into another tank might be the best option.

PS Have you tried googling for better pet care information instead of asking us numpties on Efests?

After Barry's googling efforts...

freezer the poor bugger in order to save the rest of the fish in the tank whilst you are away. :(

Are the scales all puffed out too?

I had one with popeye that survived - only one ever though - often a sign of overcrowding or water quality problems - I put Melafix in - or if you have tea tree oil in the house use a couple of drops of that.

.

Has it started drifting aimlessly around the tank yet?

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
    • Easily my favourite set of the day.
