insuring a car abroad

My girlfriend and I are going to Burning Man (Las Vegas and San Francisco) next year on a little road trip holiday

now we WERE going to hire an RV, but it turns out we need to be 25 to do so from pretty much everywhere, and if you do rent, you have to pay Β£1000 deposit <_<

so it seems like the cheapest option is to buy a second hand one....

has anyone done this before? Is it easier to get insurance from UK or to get it over in Nevada??

any information would be greatly appreciated :D

Daft question... but you are saying you going to buy..you mean over there eh?

I`m not exactly sure about the States but it may not be as easy as one might think.

You might have to be resident to buy etc. I`d be suprised if you can get insurance over there independently as opposed to the insurance you get on a hire vehicle.

Bit of a dilema. Sorry I cant be more specific... now if you were going to Germany........

Might be slightly dearer than what you want but hiring a car will be much easier - they can usually organise the insurance too. Check the airport websites - they usually have links to their preferred hirers who have desks at the airports.

Emjoy your trip by the way!

drop the RV idea, there is no way to have a cheap RV holiday in any country. But particularly America. and if you havent driven something that big, dont assume you will be able to do so. The easiest (and safest)option would be to hire an SUV or similar, and camp.

We're looking at hiring a car to drive from New York to Montreal in November. From what I remember, Dollar rent to under 25s, but charge an excess. New York is $40 a day, which is the most expensive rate in the country, so should be a bit cheaper elsewhere.

Edit'; plus, you've obviously got to leave credit card details with them.

Thats just reminded me. Green Tortoise in San Francisco run buses there. They have a really cool hostel in SF and one in Seattle and run trips across country on converted sleeper buses. I did one of their shorter trips to Yosemite a few years back. Loved it, and I normally wouldn't go near an organised bus trip. hate them. I know they go to Burning Man cos i remember one of our drivers talking about it.

Apologies if youve already checked this out, but we went to Maine last year, had a hire car and looked at popping to Canada. In the end we decided it was too far, but I read something about it being illegal to drive US hire cars into Canada... Just a heads up in case!

old car thread revived!

my car's first mot is due (with me as owner). it's an 05, it's only got about 24k on the clock (bought it with 17k i think) and i had 2 new front tyres in june/july.

is it compulsory to put it in for a service before it's mot or can you do without? and if you do without, is it less or more expensive should it need some work done to have it pass? if it does fail, i'm thinking it should only be minor things.

i'm rubbish at cars me.

No you don't have to put it through a service - servicing is not a legal requirement it's an advisory measure from the manufacturer.

I'm sure it will be fine, make sure you check your seatbelts, lights and windscreen wipers are working, as they will fail you even though its a really quick fix. If its never been serviced then you should probably get it done as it will need an oil change and stuff, but that should make much difference to the MOT.

You really need looking after dont you Me Likkle Amps!

It should piss through really---but yer never know. What I tell the bairns is.. expect a bill of at least Β£100-Β£150.. then you wont be shocked.

Pre-MOTs used to be useful--esp with the type of motors I`ve usually had eg: owld ones..but with the newer cars its uneccessary..and you are right, as long as you return to the testing garage (within 10 days I think) the re-test is free.

Now-- d`yer wanna know how to bake soda bread....?

yeah i've spoken to folk at work and apparently that's a different thing altogether.

do you mean it shouldn't make a difference to the mot? the car runs as good as it did when i got it, and there's been no problems that i'm aware of. so i'll be a bit miffed if it doesn't pass. only one way to find out though!

one of the ladies told me to get a pre-mot check too. but surely that's just throwing money away. whatevers wrong will need to get fixed in the pre check anyway. and it's apparently free to get a it re-tested if you get it fixed in the same garage.
