hansen said best premiership defender. and i've asked, surely there's been a better right back than neville in these 19 years. even if it was only for one or two seasons.

We have the easiest run in, facing nine of the ten teams in the bottom half. We face 4 teams in the top half too, one of them being Liverpool at home, which is why I think it largely significant.

Hmmmm .... just looked thru your results this season to date. You've had some good results against teams above you, and some bad results against the teams below.

I can't see some of those results against the better teams being repeated, while I can see more chance of some of the teams below you beating you than was likely before the window.

I think it's far less of a given than you're believing.

The advocate general of the European Court of Justice has voiced support for the use of foreign satellite football systems, saying that the use of decoder cards can not be restricted to one country.

The news is a major coup for foreign satellite suppliers and Hampshire licensee Karen Murphy and could potentially have huge ramifications for the Premier League and Sky.

Not binding

However, the opinion is “not binding on the Court of Justice” and the ECJ judges will now consider their own verdict in “complete independence”. They will hand that decision down later in the year.

A further hearing will then be held in the UK High Court to discuss how to incorporate the ruling.

The opinion has no immediate impact on the legality of foreign satellite systems.

Internal market

Advocate General Julianne Kokott said she took the view that the use of decoder cards could not be restricted to one territory as that would “petition the internal market” and be contrary to the principles of the freedom of the European market.

“The marketing of broadcasting rights on the basis of territorial exclusivity is tantamount to profiting from the elimination of the internal market,” she said.

“Consequently, the specific subject-matter of the rights in the transmission of football matches does not justify a partitioning of the internal market, and thus also does not justify the resulting restriction of the freedom to provide services.”

She also dismissed the copyright argument put forward by the Premier League — a key plank in its argument. She said “the freedom to provide services is also in line with the Satellite and Cable Directive and with European competition law. Equally, neither does the Conditional Access Directive constitute a barrier to the use of foreign decoder cards.

Erm, given that there's only five teams above us then this doesn't really say much, especially as we're only set to play three of them. We've had two wins, two defeats and three draws, which is far poorer than our record against the teams below us, so I'm not convined by this argument.

Also, have you considered Liverpool's record against teams above and below them?

I've not looked at Liverpool's results, but I reckon they're of less relevance for what might happen for the rest of the season than you're own - Liverpool are not the same team as they were a few weeks ago, they're far stronger (even before getting Suarez & Carroll ... and Carroll will be back for the game against S'land, and keen to bang one in in that match).

While at the same time your own team is a little weaker than it was. Not much, but enough by itself to perhaps see you drop a couple of places before the end of the season even if Liverpool weren't improved and right behind you.

The fixtures might be slightly in your favour, but they've gotta be won, and S'land are a little flakey at times, a flakeyness that Liverpool now seem to have got past.

it's not actually anything new. My local uses foreign cards, and has has the legalities checked out, and fought off attempts by Sky to stop him doing what he does.

With Sky costing puns something like £10k a year, there's going to be much more of this.

I was at the game last night. West Ham weren't brilliant (although they were good), but Blackpool were awful awful awful. Two of WH's goals were a but lucky (as was Blackpool's), but with the non-stop pressure they were inevitable.

The Rob Green f**kup towards the end cheered me up though

So the "real" Ronaldo wouldn't have scored in the Premier League? Romario also banged them in in Holland. Would he have been a dud too in the premier league? It's an irrelevant argument anyways having seen Suarez play and score. Looks quite the talent.
