oh, they're defo 2nd tier at the mo - but much improved under Kenny. They're a club on the up at the moment, just as they were a falling club under Woy.

If (hugely unlikely, but not impossible) he becomes a similar force (tho it'd be in a different way) on the pitch as Ronaldo became at Utd, then he gets to command the same sort of stupid money. Or elevates Liverpool back to being regular champions. Etc.

well in that case you're simply saying things for the sake of it.

there'll be 100 more signings this season that are more likely to turn out to be bargain of the century than this.

you mention ronaldo. bought for 12, had a phenomenal spell at man utd and sold for 80. carroll will never top that in his wildest dreams. so already, without anything happening in his liverpool career, it's not in with a chance bargain of the century.

I assume ronaldo is the biggest profit made on any transfer in terms of total profit, does anyone know the biggest profit in terms of percentage profit. Im obviously not including players coming through the youth teams. I tried ot google but could not find it.

well, where they are depends on how many tiers you (or I) think there are.

I was working from the basis that those in with a decent shout of the top four are the 1st tier (so that's the current top 5).

I was working on the basis that the middle-ish of the league is 2nd tier (and Liverpool are very near the top of that group).

I was working on the basis of the relegation battle being the 3rd tier - and that's not Liverpool, nor been them at any point of the season. Yes, they were in there briefly, but had games in hand when they were. Even under Woy there was never a serious suggestion that they'd be in a relegation fight at the end of the season.

I haven't mentioned Rooney and didn't "agree" with Carroll either. There was nothing to "agree" with. All I did was report what he said.

On the basis of your last few posts, its quite clear whos talking shite.

I'd think that Anelka would be in the running - bought by Arsenal for £500k, and sold for (I think it was) £22M. That's more than a 40 times return on investment.

Obviously the fees involved are disgusting.

But Liverpool made the sort of money Ashley Young will be worth in the summer in profit. For what? For getting rid of a man who is a shadow of his former self (who in my opinion was as bad as any English player at the World Cup), and bringing in one of the hottest young talents in the country. That's a potential bargain in my books.

Sure, there are off-field concerns, but Joey Barton, Marlon King and Craig Bellamy are proof that as long as you don't actually kill someone, you will still have a very good career in football.

it all just reminds me of the tore andre flo to rangers transfer. it was 12m and people say he was a flop. fact is he actually had a good return and if you're ignoring transfer fees, he was a good signing.

but you simply can't ignore a transfer fee. for him to be 'a bargain', for me he will need to better torres' record by some way. as he was only about 20m wasn't he?

The fee Liverpool paid has to be looked at within the full context of what was going on.

Torres was going, so they needed someone. And someone at a silly price is certainly a better bargain for them than no one at no price, if they again want to be somewhen soon trying to fight for the title.

The options Liverpool had for another striker were very limited, especially as they didn't want to buy an oldie that they'd have no resale value from.

It's silly money if Carroll doesn't live up to expectations, but it's a more than fair price if he does - and there's the possibility that it could be bargain price too, if he surpasses expectations.

No one knows which of these it'll be until a couple of years down the line from now.
