Libertines

I'm mildly interested, I liked them back in the day and saw them live a couple of times but quite frankly the fact that Pete & Carl are a couple of dicks meant I got tired of them. The same album I loved back then doesn't do it for me anymore, and the second album was weak as well.

I was gonna start a thread the other day about how there seems to be no hype at all for the libertines. Considering how hyped it was on announcment day.

I mean there have been threads regarding Arcade fire, Guns n Roses, Blink, Biffy. QOSTA have been mentioned a lot as have Paramore, mainly due to boob incident.

What does everyone actually think? I'm personally going to see them, I really liked there two albums when they were first about, yet when I've listened recently I havent had the same enjoyment.

Will they be like Kaisers last year when nobody was talking about them and they put in one of the performances of the weekend?

Meh, for me the Libertine's were always style over substance. They had an incredibly vocal & loyal following that gave the impression that they had a bigger following than they actually did. The fact that the NME loved them & championed Pete as Lennon incarnate, combined with tabloid coverage & that at the time British 'indie' music was experiencing somewhat of a resurgence is why they're seen as a 'big band'. In reality they never played any big venues and I seriously doubt if they have a 'big show' in them. When you look at other bands playing over weekend someone like Limp Bizkit will command 60k people with ease. I saw Doherty solo last year, he was alright but hardly an enigmatic frontman. I reckon they'll be OK but that's where it ends. Their 'big reunion' might've been better suited to a large headline gig rather than a festival. At fests you see so many bands it's easy to distinguish who's good & who's crap, bands you're looking forward to may end up playing a poor live set whereas you can pleasantly surprised by someone you might not like on record but prove to be excellent live.

If people's estimated clash-finders are right I think I'll be watching Cancer Bats, their recent live shows have supposedly been amazing.

I'm a big fan but I have to agree with what's already been said to an extent. I'm not sure if it's the fact that there's so many other bands I'm more excited about (Arcade Fire and Weezer to name but two) but I've sort of forgotten all about the Libertines.

I'm sure that on the day I'll be loving it.

I just feel their time has been and gone, it may be a big ol' car crash. Would have preffered Babyshambles to be honest, seems more relevant than any of the Libertines stuff. Will end up going to see them as they are classic (well recent classic) songs nonetheless.

Also I think that they're far better suited to smaller club gigs where the atmosphere is more chaotic. I saw them in the Arena in Middlesbrough in 2004 I think it was and they were absolutely amazing but I think you can attribute at least a good proportion of that to the crowd. It was like one big scrum and you were lucky to get out alive.

My concern is that that kind of shambolic chaos just doesn’t transfer very well to a big festival stage when you've got loads of space to move around in the crowd. It’s like the time the Arctic Monkeys headlined Glastonbury and they simply looked lost up there. They didn’t have a big enough sound or presence for the occasion and I doubt the Libs will either.

Stick em on a smaller tent stage however and I’ll be all over it!

The festival is a couple of months away, theres plenty of time for the hype to start and I am sure it will. I think the lack of the discussions is because theres nothing really to discuss at present. They havent played any other festivals or gigs to generate discussion and have been out of the news. All the media focus at present is on the world cup. Once that is over they will need something else to discuss and im sure the libs will be high on the list. There may be bands like blink 182 who are currently generating more discussion but thats a lot down to the musical preferences of people using the board. When you think about it, its not like the british media are going mad over a blink reunion either, maybe things will be different in august, who knows? I fully expect libs to have the biggest crowd of the weekend.

Massive fan of their music bt agree they might be a bit out of place in front of this many people. i agree that they would be awesome in the tent but it would just be pure carnage and ay too dangerous. Also think that they will get the biggest crowd of the festival. A lot of people are only going for the libs which i think is a bit sad but there you go. Would say im most looking forward to blink, limp bizkit and QOTSA

    • Not necessarily but it should be, Download have a habit of messing it uo when others get the bookings on point. Good Charlotte I doubt are playing 3rd down and that too 3 that day while dreamy is too strong. I think you'd have one another day to help sell weekend tickets. I also doubt Papa Roach play.
    • Here's a bit of a wild stab, few placings may be off, and for all I know half of these won't actually be touring next year, but screw it, it's a bit of fun   Pyramid: Sabrina Carpenter, Phoebe Bridgers, TBA (Florence + The Machine), Garbage, The Last Dinner Party, Interpol, Alex James Britpop Classical Other: Chase & Status, Teddy Swims, Clairo, The Kooks, Zara Larsson, Kingfishr, Sports Team, Orbital West Holts: Robyn, Baby Keem, De La Soul, Deltron 3030, JID, Dua Saleh, kwn, Daniela Latila Woodsies: Bonobo, Darkside, TBA (Tame Impala), Laufey, Warmduscher, Wednesday, The Lottery Winners, The Royston Club, Florence Road Park: Patti Smith, Super Furry Animals, Slayyyter, The Cardigans, Skye Newman, Kelly Lee Owens, Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers   Pyramid: Harry Styles, The xx, Richard Ashcroft, The Pogues, Jessie J, Sigrid, Travis Other: Rosalia, Sombr, Mitski, Alex Warren, Holly Humberstone, Cat Burns, Pale Waves, Yard Act West Holts: Basement Jaxx, Elyanna, Clipse, L’Imperatrice, Nation of Language, Jim Legxacy, Yazmin Lacey, RIP Magic Woodsies: Suede, Chvrches, Bleachers, MUNA, The Cribs, Keo, Bleech 9:3, The Lilacs Park: MARINA, Magdalena Bay, Jacob Alon, TBA (Lily Allen performs West End Girl), Getdown Services, Isaac Wood, Snail Mail, Madra Salach Pyramid: Sam Fender, Hozier, David Byrne, Cher, Obongjayar, David Gray, Billy Ocean Other: Doja Cat, Deftones, Addison Rae, Ren, Viagra Boys, Maisie Peters, The Reytons, Hard Life West Holts: Kano, Thievery Corporation, Angine De Poitrine, Thee Sacred Souls, Brooke Combe, Sasha Keable, Master Peace Woodsies: The Wombats, Metronomy, Geese*, Dry Cleaning, EsDeeKid, Sienna Spiro, Cowboy Hunters, Radio Free Alice Park: Big Thief, Laura Marling, MJ Lenderman, Richard Dawson, Oklou, Maruja, Dead Dads Club, Ratboys   *There's always one band booked for Woodsies that ends up being massively under-billed and gets shut down really early. • Another Kraftwerk one for me today, as just back from seeing them.
    • Completed my 2026 survey. Put down Super Furry Animals as my most wanted for next year but suspect the moment has gone for that. Popped a big shopping list in the box for who else you would like to see. 🙂
    • Blink-182 / Avril Lavigne / Good Charlotte / Neck Deep    Lamb of God / Malevolence      System Of A Down / Five Finger Death Punch / Skindred / Godsmack   Motionless In White / Poppy      Deftones / Gojira / Knocked Loose / President    Sabaton / Amon Amarth
