Has anyone else done Glasto post ACL Knee Reconstruction?

I mashed up my knee playing footie in Oz last year & had to have an ACL reconstruction. My rehab is well behind schedule, my knee is still really weak & I'm suffering from secondary complications with patella femoral syndrome (i.e. kinda like knee pain associated with a slightly out-of-place kneecap / weak quads).

I'm really worried that if it's a muddy Glasto I'll twist my knee & end up snapping the hammy graft that was screwed into my knee as a replacement ligament :P

Has anyone else got any experience of going to Glasto with this kind of injury?

Cheers,

Paula

knackered knees too. Knee cap in the wrong place and all that. Osteopath and acupuncture happening at mo to try and sort it. Its hard work. Take a chair and be prepared to walk miles over rough ground - up and down hill. The Hill of Death nearly killed me last year!

Good luck Ray, I've had knee surgery - although not ACL - and last year nearly killed me and in a way I know this year will be worse. If it's dry you'll be fine, if it's wet then god help us all.

I'd say carry a chair, it's the only solution really although a total pain.

Ooooh, I might be able to help you out here.

Last February, I severely dislocated my left kneecap while playing in a rugby match, went to tackle someone and heard it go crunch as I hit the floor, something I'd done a million times before. Although I didn't damage the tendons and ligaments badly at all, some of the cartilage was done in and i'ts never been one hundred percent since then

Roll forward to last Glastonbury (about 4 months later) I think I was able to carry my rucksack with all my clothes and sleeping bag inside whilst carrying a crutch and having a knee brace on, though this was purely for insurance. I'm fairly sure I would have needed both of these coming down the hill from Ped Gate B had it been raining but it was dry and manageable. Getting back up at that hill as it pissed down at 2am on Monday morning and little rivers that ran down it was more interesting but manageable, as my other half took my rucksack for me so I could concentrate on not slipping over, but really it was fine. I only used the crutch up and down that hill on those ttwo times.

Because I had difficulty getting up and down hills (still do) I made sure we camped on the floor of the valley, over in the field of the John Peel tent where it was nice and flat and I wouldn't have to risk slipping over on the way up to the tent or going down from it. I'd practice getting in and out of your tent if you can- mine hurt a little bit as I did it because I can't crouch, and had to come up from a kneeling position- and you may need to leave a bit of space outside the door for manouvering.

Last year, I had a rucksack style bag that folded out into a stool and it was fab (well until it spectacularly collapsed underneath me on Saturday night) as I could put my bits and pieces in it for the day and have a sit down when I needed to rest. I have no idea what these babies are called and I can't find one by googling but maybe someone else will. If it's dry and you've got a mate to help pull you up then you could sit on the floor (or if you can get up on your own that's fine) but if not I'd recommend one of these.

I wore my knee brace on quite a few occasions during the festival especially at night when I was a bit knackered- I can't keep my knee bent with weight on top like you would for running- it just gave me some added support in case of something happening which didn't. But then I was far too sensible and stayed on the outside of crowds and didn't pogo up and down like a madman like a normally do- I did a little bit whilst watching The Wonder Stuff and boy was I sore the next morning!

If you need to know anything else, let me know, I'll be happy to help out a fellow dodgy kneer. Nearly 14 months later it's still not right and you have inspired me to finally go to see someone again about it.

I would really recommend the vulkan stabilising knee supports. You can get heavy-duty ones or fairly lightweight ones depending on the seriousness of your injury but mine enable me to actually jog a little, albeit with pain afterwards but in a crowd they would be invaluable.

That said they make you look like a bit of a tool and I wouldn't want anyone to compromise on their glastofashion for the sake of a piddly cruciate ligament.

One of our gang, Gareth the Fit One, smashed his hip in a mountain biking accident and has been forced to give up his ticket. He doesn't think he'll be able to cope with the walking this year.

My daughter Lizzie broke her foot a month or so before Glasto a few years ago and came with it in plaster wrapped round with carrier bags. But the water got to the plaster and in the end she had to cut it off (the plaster not her foot).

Went with my brother in '95 when he was 6 months post-ACL repair (+ fracture patella). He had this pretty solid knee brace made, which all worked fine so long as he didn't carry anything. Was dry that year though.

Reading this thread with much interest.

I have arthritis in both knees and that advice (strength) was exactly what my Dr told me 6 years ago.

I tore some cartilage in my left knee and they wouldn't even touch it back then...had to rehab and let it heal on it's own. The doc says that my next stop will be knee replacement and in his words..."You don't want that yet".

I've been wondering how they will hold up over five days...and this gives me a lot of good info to consider.

At least I've also been more faithful about hitting the gym at least three times a week for the past month. I know this much walking will be a big test, so I'm trying to build up more strength and endurance with Glasto in mind.

I had reconstructive knee surgery last april (about the 18th I think). I'd torn my cartilage and had to have it repaired etc. - I was on crutches for a few weeks and in a knee brace for even longer - I had the knee brace taken off on the friday before glastonbury.

I did find it hard work - I spent a lot of time sitting down with the coldest things I could find pressed onto my knee to try and reduce the swelling that I'd accumulated. You have to be careful as a lot (in not all) of the walking is on slopes which puts added pressure on the knee. By sunday I didn't want to stand up - I took the stuff back the car which was agony - came back, watched the end of status quo - then headed straight to the other stage where I remained sat down all afternoon until it was time to head back to Madness - and I then stayed at the pyramid for the remainder of the evening.

I suffered from naivety - I did far too much walking too early which damaged my enjoyment towards the end. You may have to miss certain things that you'd like to see, just to give your knee a rest. But I think if you keep that in mind you will still have a great time.

    • So we've signed a Horny Czech, and Bruno's turned up the training camp instead of doing Isak's nonsense.   Still not sure I believe Bruno's staying mind, but glad he's not doing the sh*t Arsenal are asking him to do to lower the price. If they want him they can stump up.   My suspicion is that whichever of Madrid/Man City don't start next season with Rodri will go for Bruno, and one of them will come in while Arsenal have f**ked about trying to get him cheap, which while I absolutely want to keep him, would still be good enough bants and a nice middle finger that I wouldn't mind it so much. I just wish we'd report Arsenal for tapping up.   If rumours are to be believed, we're after 2 more defensive signings, and an attacking player, on top of a replacement if Bruno leaves, having already signed a LW, 2 CMs, a GK, and some youth players. Huge churn, but apart from a couple of Bazou Toure's games for Ivory Coast at the world cup, I've not seen any of them play. Over 2 summers we've basically changed our entire team aside from the CBs.
