But did anyone here go to the very first Glastonbury? I'm a third year journalism student and I'm producing a radio documentary about the 40th Anniversary of Glastonbury. I've got a number of ideas for this documentary, but one of the ideas I've had is to speak to somebody who actually went to the first one about their experiences. If there any 'seasoned pros' of Glasto out there who did attend the inaugural festival then would you be willing to hold a brief telephone interview with me for me to use in my documentary. I'm quite fascinated to learn about it and how it compared to Glasto in its current state from somebody who was actually there! Similarly does anyone know someone who did, who could put me in touch?

Many thanks!

Oh but of course, I'm not getting my hopes up about speaking to Michael to be fair, but Emily has at least given me some indication that she might be able to do it via Twitter...won't be finished til around May time, but I'll try my best to get it online once it's handed in and such!

Aye tis russycarps, I'm aspiring to get a job on some kind of publication that would mean I no longer have to pay to attend such things! That's the reason I'm giving anyway!

That's fantastic Mr Prime Minister, I have an interview with EE tomorrow so after that I'll have some idea what direction the documentary is going in and how much time I have to play with, so while I'm in the studio would you be willing to have a wee chat on the phone about it? If so give me a PM and we can sort something out, obviously I'd need your real name and suchlike, but it'd be great to talk to someone who will clearly have plenty of Glasto memories and experiences!

If I get permission of the various people I interview then for sure, some people are a bit funny about what various things are used for, but I can't see any reason why I shouldn't be able to. If I do manage to I'll pop a link up on here for sure! Any suggestions anyone may have about content and direction I should take this in are more than welcome. My idea is for it to be a 40th Anniversary thing, documenting the history of the festival, the influence its had on other festivals, artists and the music industry in general, and also where the festival is likely to go in the future. I'm definitely going to ask Emily what her vision for it is when her old man calls it a day and retires. Hopefully I'm onto a winner here, glad people are interested in it!

I went to the first four (1979 on) - I'm still not convinced 1971 was Glastonbury as such, but that's nit-picking really. We used call it Pilton Festival, though as we came from just over the Wiltshire border doing so was probably just because we knew it was really at Pilton.

I'm sure there's at least one person on here who has been to every single one, certainly there there a are quite a few who have - I think one is photographed and mentioned in dispatches on the "real" Galtonbury site, but that may have changed after the re-vamp.

I went to Glastonbury Fayre in 1979 { and the various years after that } - all I can recall was Steve Hillage although we may have seen Peter Gabriel as well - although how we got there - who drove etc etc is all a big haze as sadly since that time I have had two strokes which does tend to screw up the old memory box.

Some of my mates went to the 1971 event and that is how I ended up being dragged along to the 1979 event.

In my papers I am sure I still have part of the ticket - no wrist bands in those days.

Life was a lot simpler then.

Wow that's really impressive. Would you be willing to spin a few Glasto yarns over the phone to me glasto-worker, as I keep saying, I'm fascinated to hear people's stories and memories of the festival in years gone by. Would any of your friends who went in '71 be willing to talk to me too? If you could put me in touch with anyone, or be willing to help yourself, then that'd be great!

Also did anybody here attend in '84 when The Smiths played? I've read things suggesting the decision to book The Smiths had a similar reaction to Jay-Zgate, so it would be interesting to speak to someone about their experiences of the show. Radiohead '97 as well, just because of how notoriously brilliant it is. As you can see my ideas at the minute are a bit scatty, but I just want to get as much footage as I possibly can at the minute, piece it together that way and hope it ends up with some kind of contingence!

Thanks timespeedup, that's awesome!

Yeah Laura, it is fairly fun at the minute. I'm sure I won't be saying this come May, I'm pretty sure all the nitpicky stuff like editing will eventually stress me out and suchlike. But at the minute it's pretty fun, and Emily was uber lovely talking to me today! Didn't give me any exclusives I'm afriad, and I forgot to ask about Pearl Jam! I will try my best to get it online when I finish it, although I promised I'd run it by Emily first, but she didnt play anything especially incriminating so it should be fine!

Worth looking at the DVD of the 1971 Glastonbury Fayre by Nic Roeg and maybe trying to track down some of the key people in it.

As for what was the first, I covered the Shepton Mallet Festival in 1970 at the Bath & West Showgroundas a journo and also attended the Bath Blues Fest in 1969 which, some argue, was the original inspiration.

    • Guitarricadelafuente was bloody brilliant tonight. This is going to be a very Spanish focussed year for me. Rusowsky dragging out Las Ketchup on Saturday has the potential to be a Prima magic moment.
    • £112 for standard entry. No thank you.
    • Meanwhile Gracie Abrams is £92 for the cheapest with the average price around £160 for lower tier and £103 standing.   First time in a while I've gone from a definite yes to a definite no on price alone.   Amble was £31 this morning.
