Bands refusing to let their sets be televised...

Was just racking my brain to think of any bands at Glasto have headlined and refused to let it be broadcast? Saw in interviews around the docuthing, recently that Damon Fromblur was reluctant last year, relented and was ultimately pleased with the results. I know that RATM refused at,I think, Reading last year and still played (which was obviously disappointing for those not there).

I was thinking that if, on the absolutely outside chance that Zep were to play, they would probably refuse the broadcast. And probably the Stones too. Has the broadcast become so important that it would rule a band out , or would it depend on the act. Discuss.....

No. Leonard Cohen refused to be broadcast back in 09 I think and as a result none of his set was.

Some, such as Neil Young, allow a few songs to be played.

Others, such as Blur are happy for 'most' of the set to be broadcast, but not all.

I think in recent years with music DVDs, bootleg trade etc. certain artists arent as comfortable with it as they were five or six years ago.

edit: Ah just realised you meant 'headliners' specifically. Um to answer this I dont think it would be a deal breaker- ie. if a fee for the stones was agreed and they said- absolutely no broadcast Im sure they would still headline. Having said that, when they played IoW a couple of years ago they showed a couple of songs...

Was that not one of the reasons that Glasto and U2 kept falling out ?

U2 wanted far more control over the TV , and Bono was worried that the camera's may purposefully

concentrate on his bad bits to show him up !

:P

Didn't Leonard Cohen refuse because he wanted people to come and see him on his tour rather than watch him on telly. He only performed cos his manager screwed him over for cash and bankrupted him so he needed all the money he could get!

I can see why bands who are touring would not allow full coverage of their set.

If your touring and you have 2 or 3 wow moments within your set then your not going to want everyone to see these on national TV otherwise the wow moments on the tour are no more as everyone will have already seen them

Seem to recall something about Oasis in 07 only allowing earlier songs to be televised and none from the new album. I think I watched some it back afterwards and it was a right old messy edit.

I've never understood why certain bands are so obsessed with retaining their image rights. There's nothing more aloof than some jumped-up rock band informing the crowd that they can't use their cameras at a gig, for example.

Placebo are one of the worst examples for this. I'd be embarrassed to charge people to come and then start laying down rules and regulations.

I can understand why bands don't want to be on telly etc that is their own decision.

What I don't understand is why with over 3000 acts on over the weekend why oh why do the BBC insist on getting artists to perform in their stupid little backstage area. Surely they should be covering the festival & there is plenty going on at the festival. It really gets my back up!!!

    • Jesse Malin at Manchester Halle St Peter's last night.   So good to see him back touring after the trauma he has been through, him and the backing band sounded great.   Support was Bason. I quite enjoyed him, but man, that guy cannot sing.
