New Order

Hey Guys,

I'm quite surprised no one had made a topic about this, New Order are surely on the cards given their whole history with Glastonbury and everything?

I would love to see them there, As they are on my must see list, and i'm prettey sure they have a good chance of playing given that it's Glastos 40th anniversary and as I said about their history.

Thoughts and Opinions anyone?

Erm .... what do you mean by "given their whole history with Glastonbury and everything"? :P

That aside, I'm pretty sure that they're now a dodo (due to major spats), tho I could be wrong.

They're brilliant - but shocking live!

it depends when and where. Sometimes I've caught them they've been superb.

Such as at Reading in (i think it was) '89 ... the band were the dogs (Technique, almost in full, plus more), tho the crowd was crap. Barney: "don't you guys dressed in black know how to dance". :P

Compared against that, I saw them at a NYE show at Ally Pally in the early 90s (Underworld and Chems also on the bill), but they were clearly enjoying their NYE and were very pissed.

The show at Glasto a few years ago was just simply boring.

Well I thought because they headlined loads in the early 80s they could be on the cards for the 40th anniversary?

They played in '81, but didn't headline.

edit: my missus has just told me that they did. I think she's wrong but maybe I am.

They played in 87, and I don't think they headlined (tho maybe I'm wrong).

(it's possible that they played again between those years - I don't have full records. But I don't think they did).

I'm not sure that they played again until 2005. If they had I'd have thought I'd have gone to see them, and I can't remember doing so.

It's probably the story about the Hawkwind fans vs New Order, that entwines them in Glasto folklore.

As stated earlier New Order are not a going concern at the moment. Whether we get either of the current side projects; Hooky's Freebass or Barney's Bad Lieutanant is another matter.

Bernard is now in "Bad Lieutenant". http://badlieutenant.net/ they're album is wonderful and very later new orderesque - the song on the website Sink or Swim is very much like something off of Waiting for the Sirens Call.

Somewhere though (and I can't remember where I saw it...) he said that his intention was to do what they did with Joy Devision, carry on the same music and ideas, but under a new title and since Mr Hook is a bit of prat, they have become Bad Lieutenant instead.

They recently toured with the petshop boys and did a number of NO songs.

:P

Uh, yeah, they split a while ago?

Shame though, a band with some classics, plus they did a few JD songs live as well.

On a side note but related - Who here thinks 24 Hour Party People is the best film of all time? I do. :P

Peter hook said in his book and numerous interviews that New Order are no more.

yeah, but such things have been being said since the late eighties. After having spent so much time together over the years they get bored with each other.

Personally I'll be rather surprised if Barney and Hooky aren't seen on a stage together somewhen in the future, as they've been falling out with each other only to kiss and make up since they were at school.

Whether or not that's as NO tho is another thing - I think it's The Other Two who would be more likely to not be much interested.

That Ally Pally show was pretty dire wasnt it? Cant remember if it was the first or second time I saw them but know both times I was very p'eed off at how shocking Bernard was live. I recall the best bit was Bez coming on stage for a dance.

Good thing Underworld and Laurent Garnier live totally made up for it eh? :P

Can anyone recall there being a full size funfair at the back of the hall? Got some vague recollection.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
