He does a Christmas charity show in LA every year and I went a few years back.

Awesome live!

He played overtime by like 30 minutes and almost had to be pulled offstage to end the show.

Great show.

I'd see him again in a heartbeat.

So a man who has won countless grammys, and recently headlined the 02 for two nights.

He's more than big enough to headline.

Ampersand, yeah there are loads of other songs that mean my theory was rubbish. Big Brother off Talking Book for example. Gangster Paradise off Songs to the Key of Life.

I read reviews saying the same...

it's absolute bollocks. The majority of his set was taken from his 'golden' period (Talking Book to FFF), and was pretty faultless for the people who know him for more than the hit singles.

The people who complained he didn't do enough of his hits, just wanted to hear the hits that were from before he matured into the true genius that we know him for (ie, up to Music Of My Mind), and were oblivious to the really masterful songs he's written and recorded

I think he might have played one (!!!) new song

as the friend of mine that went is a very experienced music journo, I doubt he got it wrong.

It's perhaps the case that he saw him on a different tour, but that's not what I understood him to be saying.

well... music journos are always 'experts' ...

I can't remember the previous time he came to the uk, so I'd be intrigued to know which one it was

I've seen him 3 (or 4?) times since he came and pretty much stunned the audience at the Rainbow in '74. The O2 shows, were as good as almost anything I've seen in the last few years

To add to the James Brown debate. Yes he was a musical genius, but his Glasto performance was poor to say the least.

Saw a bit of James Brown at Glasto 2004 when I was drunk, sleep deprived, soaking wet and had just watched a man pull his pants down and take a dump on the floor.

Then James Brown came on the stage and kept shouting 'Uggh!'.

I was not in a good place.

Yep I saw him at the O2 and thought he was brilliant. There were a few moments during the middle of the set that I could have lived without, a few jazzy workouts that weren't for me, but then he's always played them so he's not going to change now. That gripe aside though it was a fantastic experience, watching a genuine legend performing some of the greatest (in my opinion) songs ever written. If he does play Glasto then I hope it would be as a headliner and i'd be there to see him without a doubt, can't think of a better way to finish an evening (well musically).
