"Large record companies used to be ran by Hippies with shit loads of cash, they would see a band and think "Oh yeah, lets release this record, this will make people feel something emotionally". Nowadays it's just people in suits with a business plan."

You know, I'm not quite sure about that, there were lots of people who adopted hippy dress and ran record companies who were just as rapacious as a stereotyped business man in a suit. And don't kiud yourself, they had business plans. Banks don't lend money to people without them Richard Branson springs immediately to mind. Wearing jeans and an open necked shirt doesn't prevent these people being obsessed with making money, it's a disguise they'll wear to get what they want. Capitalist chameleons.

This is quite a good topic, so I guess we are going of topic however

The likes of Ahmet Ertegun, Branson, Tony Wilson, Chris Blackwell and Martin Mills and Nick Austin. are either gone or very hard to find.

Independent labels have been bought up and the strategy changed on how they manage there catalogues and there artists. The like of Sony/Warner/EMI/Universal have it seems, less sole than the older labels. However the emergence of Live Nation and such has again changed the the normal perception of what a label does (live nation whilst not owning the music to many artist is starting too).

Time will tell.....

Oh and to keep get back on track with the thread does anybody else feel that as soon as one girl comes along another label wheels out a clone?

i don't think they're all a bunch of fakers if you wander around you will notice there are a large number of quirky slightly insane people wandering about

some of them are good some bad but theres nothing wrong with a bit of quirkyness off kilter is the way forwards

laura marling and florence are great and few of the new female singers -blue roses marina and thoeretical girl are pretty good (which bugger put them all on to clash with the rugby) But the best of the bunch is probably liz green would sincerly recomend you check her out

there has alway been a number of off kilter quirky female singer it just seems that that peole are giving them more of a chance and that record companies are giving them a chance

there does seem a load of female singers in the world of weirdy beardy folk is this what people mean by a bearded lady

I wouldn't say Little Boots is trying to be quirky at all, shes great live and her music is very danceable. She was great in the futures tent at T. (Going to see her in Dec to). I think its more of the media portays artists influence by there record companies, they say one thing or do something thats perfectly normal to them(i am sure most of us do something that seems absolutely bizarre to someone else) and the media blows it all out of proportion.

I blame the media trying to seem all cool and like they know about music.

and oh La Roux has bulletproof which is a good song and maybe In For The Kill, but the rest of the album is just poor IMO. Ladyhawke on par with little boots and why I don't personally like bat for lashes, she is obviously very talented and Florence is also pretty good live but with meh album.

Lot of love on here for Bat for Lashes. She's talented but her music has never really moved me, just seems to wash past and not leave any residual thoughts or feelings behind. Just an opinion.

I think that both Florence and La Roux have both done strong debut albums. I realise the eighties electronica thing isn't to everyone's taste, but they are good, catchy pop-songs. Agree the voice gets a bit much, but there are a couple of songs where it isn't on full screech, Colourless Colour for instance is one of my faves. Florence's debut for me could do with 2 tracks taken off which are obvious filler and not up to the standard of the rest of it, but it's a solid effort.

After seeing Jools last week, I reckon Paloma Faith thinks she Bjork, or her stylist does.

On the topic of girl singers, 2 of the most credible around for me are those singers in PARAMORE and JOY FORMIDABLE.

Saw Hayley Williams on TV being interviewed recently, you could tell she was really into the music, and came accross as a decent sort.

    • Tbf that happened to me in 2022 so not a one off. 40 euros to drive down 3 streets. I'd have done a runner but the reason for getting the taxi in the first place is cos I couldn't walk no more.
    • I was fully prepared (waterproof jacket, extra pair of socks, foldable umbrella), but after four hours in the rain (from Geese through Oklou to Florence Road), it was just too much. Already at the hotel, let's hope tomorrow's better.
