Does anyone remember the year that the football was shown in a big white tent and at half time the telly (it was a long time ago) was turned off to talk about God. Apparently you have never seen a tent empty so quickley. Could have been 94

I'm going with 30 odd people this year...out of which only 5 or 6 of us are big football fans who follow teams and go to matches. But i'd say that virtually all of the 25 who don't always come to the pub with us to watch England tournament matches and this will be the same for everyone else.

the only thing i can think of that will not effect any of the acts is getting another field from somewhere... and setting up a few screen's there... dunno how it would work tho

A field that holds, has access and egress and toilet facilities for 80 - 100,000 people. Good luck with that search!

I think the Other Stage field would work best, I know the music would probably be affected but not by that much taking into consideration it takes 40 odd minutes to set a band up anyway. It also seems like the Other Stage isn't as "important" as the Pyramid on the 40th anniversary and therefore the timetable can be tinkered with a bit...if you get what I mean (because I don't )

I reckon enough, if they're all watching the screens rather than the stage. You could watch easily from way back from the sound tower. If it really won't hold the expected audience with a second from top Saturday act on the Pyramid at the same time then sod it, it has to be shown on the Pyramid.

I suppose it depends if theres an act playing on the Pyramid at the time, if so then it may be alright but I guess you can't just take a chance and see how many turn up on the day.

You want to see it, great! But dont assume that 100,000 other people would be happy to miss a band for a football match. Of course the crowds are big when the game is on a wednesday or thursday when there is nothing else to do but the vast majority of people wouldnt miss normal festival activities for football, in my learned opinion.

Unless everyone who has bought a ticket is asked their preference how can showing the football possibly be fair?

Everyone who has bought a glastonbury ticket has done so to watch a festival of performing arts, NOT football. The performing arts will OF COURSE take priority as we know everyone wants these activities. That is why they bought a ticket. Not to see a football match. We cannot be certain how many people would want to watch the football.

Imagine paying to go to the cinema to see a film at your local cinema, and instead of the film you have paid to watch they showed a football match instead. Would this be fair? No. YOu have paid to see a film, not a football match.

To think they will cancel music, or theatre, or circus for football is absurd.

It is arrogant in the extreme to think otherwise.

"I want to watch football therefore everyone else must too!". Wrong.

Which for me means the safest, most simple option for any game that might take place on Saturday or Sunday is to categorically state that it WON'T be shown. And if they do that, I shan't be complaining. I might utter a quick 'ah well' but it's not going to stop me enjoying myself at the festival.

The solution to this I think is fairly straight forward, if you look at it from the point of view of a festival organiser and not from the view of a football fan or anti-football fan. The following only applies if England make the second round.

Michael Eavis I have no doubt does not want to show the football, this does not mean he is necessarily anti-football, but it is an extra aggravation, in what is a logistical nightmare to organise in the first place. However has it been stated before health and safety concerns will force his hand in one of two directions. What he can not have and the police will not allow, is the possibility of 20,000 thousand cars, maybe more, nobody knows, leaving the site on the Saturday afternoon and then coming back on the Saturday night, he just CAN NOT allow this to happen. There are only two ways to stop this:

1. Announce early they WILL NOT show the football and further more, do not allow exit from the site, from maybe 12.00 on the Saturday until 21.00, this solves the issue in one hit, no need to re-arrange bands cause disruption to his schedules, and as tickets sold so fast any cancellations would quickly be snapped up. I am a football fan and would probably watch the game if it was shown on site, but this is what I would do if I was in Michael's shoes.

2. If Michael wants to be a little more accommodating, he could show the second half on the other stage, and hope for no extra time or the dreaded penalties. If he lucks out and there is no extra time and or penalties, this would only cost 45 minutes which could be planned in between bands. This would surely reduce the number of people willing to leave the site to a trickle, if they know they can see the conclusion of the match anyway.

I agree with this entirely.

The thing that is irritating me about this thread (well irritating is the wrong word, I couldnt really care less but I am happy to wade into these discussions due to the boredom factor at work) is that a lot of people in this thread (I am not referring to you of course mate) are saying things like it MUST be shown on the pyramid and that the 4th most prestigious slot at glastonbury on the 40th anniversary should be cancelled in place of a football match. It is ludicrous to expect (and a lot of people are expecting this!) that such a slot should be given over to football.
