U2 not playing?

I saw U2 in Boston last week and they were absolutely amazing. My friend who came with me was not a fan before, but now she is crazy about them! We are thinking of seeing them on a couple of European dates next year, but seeing them at Glasto would be fantastic.

Were Muse supporting them at the time? Or have those dates not happened yet? I'm intrigued as to how a band like Muse who have sold out Wembley twice handle a support slot and what US audiences think of them.

They were playing snippets of U2 tracks as intros to some of their songs, The Fly's riff for example was played. Just shows you... "Theres always a bigger fish."

In fairness to Muse, you've got to admire their business acumen. U2's fans in the States will lap them up.

Thank god for that, it's the first year I'll (hopefully) be going. I wouldn't want it tainted.

I'm not a U2 fan at all...but

...anyone who thinks that a U2 headline performance would not be a good thing at Glastonbury is frankly an idiot..The Pyramid stage is all about big sing-along songs, which U2 have in abundance. It angers and bores me when peoples self interest gets the better of them. This is why you are not in charge of booking acts at large festivals. thankfully..

I'll add me bit here...

I've been a fan for 19 or so years (bit partial to a slice of simple, passionate music) and have seen them live 8 or so times at various venues, including Wembley, Cardiff, Croke Park, Earls Courts etc., and at their best they could provide a real 'natural high'.

The way the show builds up to the high point, 2/3'rds of the way through to Where the Streets Have No Name, where they then flood the stadium with light can really leave goosebumps on you. (And thinking about it now, they used that 'ruse' on all their tours).

You can't deny they've created that 'stadium sound' and influenced a whole raft of bands, from Doves to Snow Patrol and even to that current Temper Trap single in the charts at the mo.

However... I totally agree with the 'coporatisation' argument. The last 2 visits to see 'em I felt sort of let down, as it felt as if they were just going through the motions. Bono has always been a bit of tit, but now I feel he just comes across as empty as well.

The extortionate ticket prices have not helped their case either, and reading the posts here about his nod to Blackberry etc. make me glad I didn't go.

I haven't been arsed to get tickets for the current tour: far too expensive, too corporate and too soulless. The show is now all about some giant claw, not the band. They rely far too much on technology now they are past their prime.

I wouldn't deliberately avoid them at Glasto, they are still capable of putting on a good show - but from a selfish point of view, I'd rather see a headliner I haven't seen.

So I think I'll stick to listening to Achtung Baby and remembering them at their best.
