Can't get any time off work

So basically, I booked leave for August Bank Holiday weekend around April/May time, and it hasn't gone through. I can't do any overtime to make up for it and I can't find anyone who will fill in for me. I don't particularly want to sell my ticket, so I was wondering what the best option would be?

Calling in sick, maybe?

Call in sick, I believe there was a great thread on the Glasto forums this year about the best way to convince your boss you are ill. Although, if you've already asked for that weekend off and call in sick then it's gunna seem a tad dodgy to say the least :D

if it was me i'd tell them i'm going with or without the time off, you booked it months ago, like someone else said worst you'll get is a written warning. Depends on your job tho, i work at McD's and they're very slack on discipline, once told my boss i didnt come in cos i was drunk and decided to get more drunk, was supposed to get a warning but they forgot to do it

in the late 90s one of my mates couldnt get the ime of for glastonbury so he thought stuff this and im going anyway. his boss caught him on tv during the coverage and when he got back just laughed about it and told him not to do it again.

where do you work?

is it a proper job?

i remember when i used to work for tesco that if you applied for annual leave, they had a certain amount of time that they had to get back to you in (not sure of it was a week or 2 :D ).

basically, if they came back to you after this time period............it was tough and it as your time off.

im not sure if this was tesco's own policy or it is an actual law though. look into it.

if this isn't uk law, have a look what your company's policy is. if they aren't a mickey mouse place they should have some policy.

to be fair, this isn't very well done on their behalf. ask to see a manager and explain the situation. it really isn't good enough!

hope it works out!

As people ahve already said, it obviously depends on what type of job this is. Is it a career or job?

If its just a job I'd just go and then when you get back say you booked it off months ago, just play dumb. If this is your career, then I would be careful, you don't wanna lose a good job in this financial climate!

Say you "might" have swine flu. If it's anything like it is down here that will get you 4-5 days off with the added bonus of "the doctor wouldn't see me because they don't want you coming in and infecting the entire waiting room".Then say you phoned the NHS flu hotline (make up some obscure detail like the person had an accent you couldn't understand or you were bumped around for a bit because they couldn't decide if you had it or not). Then on your first day back say "turns out it wasn't swine flu, but I was showing quite a few symptoms"... just don't forget to take your wristband off!

I've had a similar, though not quite as bad, cog thrown in the works. One of my mates has just dropped the bombshell that he has to work Thursday and thought we could go Friday morning! I wouldn't mind this if he was a Reading noob, but this is about his 4th time! After getting an earfull from me yesterday he's trying to get the Thursday off now. But I wanted to go down on Wednesday! :D

I couldn't get time off for Leeds in 02, I phoned in and told my boss I had a kidney infection on the Wednesday, went back to work the following Wednesday, still looking rather rough from the weekend. My boss took one look at me and said I looked ill and told me to go home, I toild her I'd be ok and just soldier on. She was well impressed that I'd dragged myself into work even though I wasn't fully over my illness!

I'd pull a sicky too, but if you're having to call in each day, make sure you do it somewhere quiet. Someone near me had their plan f**ked at Glastonbury, he was going into his tent each morning to call his boss, went ok for the first couple of days until one of his mates didn't realise he was on the phone and shouted into his tent "Jonno, stop being a lazy w*nker, get out here and have a beer, you're at glasto you bellend". I wonder what happened to him when he got home.

+1 for the swine flu shouts. That was what I was planning to do before my time off eventually went through alright. The advantage of it being a pandemic is that you're supposed to have a minimum number of days off, even if you're feeling alright after a few days, which should mean you don't have to ring in every day. Good luck!
