Red Hot Chilli Peppers Now VERY likey

They said they wanted to play Glastonbury a few years ago but the headliners had been booked. I now think with new material coming soon they are a strong contender for Glastonbury.

Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to return to musical action after a two-year hiatus by hooking up to write new material in October.

Drummer Chad Smith said that the funk-rock outfit were preparing to end their break from action by starting work on a new album – although they haven't decided on a producer yet.

"That's the plan (to return then)," he told Billboard. "It'll be two years in September, so now we're ready. You can't force people to play when they don't want to play or aren't ready to play or whatever – not in our band, anyway."

The sticksman added that the band hadn't outlined their specific plan for the new sessions, although he expected them to revert to their usual regime pretty quickly.

Smith said they would be likely to "do a lot of improvising and jamming and songs will come out of that. That's what we usually do. I don't know why it would be different".

Red Hot Chili Peppers' last album release was 2006's 'Stadium Arcadium'.

Never been a fan but caught the end of their set at Leeds festival a few years back. I've rarely seen such self-indulgent drivel. Closing the whole festival with an extended dirge-like jam was a major mistake and i've rarely seen such a disinterested crowd.

I'm sure they're big enough to command a massive audience but i don't believe they're actually good enough.

I think you're reading too much into this Mike99. There are plenty of enormous and enormously talented bands out there who could headline Glasto 2010. I think the Eavises are also aware of this and will hopefully act accordingly.

I'm sure Eavis has said in the past that he didn't want them, and they've asked more than once to play...Of course things change but it doesn't sound very likely to me.

Plus NME talk out of their arse 99% of the time anyway....I wouldn't trust them for a second (which is what you really mean mike )

When I saw their infamously bad performance at Leeds the other year, it wasn't the jamming that marred it, as I like to see talented musicians flaunt their talent, but it was the fact that most of the set was songs off Stadium Arcadium plus about five classics.

It's kind of taboo for bands headlining festivals to not play a greatest hits set in favour of album tracks off their latest release. Although surprisingly Green Day got away with it when I saw them at Oxegen years ago.

they were complete and total garbage at reading in 07.

set list was entirely wrong (FFS its not difficult to plan a head lining festy set - play the hits and if you are plugging a new album strategically place the new bits in and around the classics), frusciante completly threw his toys out the pram when keidis jumped on his pedal and spent the rest of gig sulking at the back.

i only went to reading that year to see them (they had been brilliant a couple of years previously at Hyde park) and since that horror show of a gig i havent been able to listen to them!!

i very much doubt they will play (basically applying the old phrase 'if mike99 says something assume the opposite or read the recycled article itself) and if they do i'll be as far away as possible!!

RHCP @ Reading 07 = worst gig ive ever been too (and thats 1) ive seen 2000+ gigs after this summer and 2) in amongst that lot there has been some seriously gash acts)

I really think they could be a brilliant headliner... assuming they stuck to the older stuff and only chucked in a couple of Stadium Arcadium songs.

I also don't see why Eavis thinks of them as music for children, it seems like they're loved by almost everyone and can be brilliant on the right day like Hyde Park or Slaine.
