Tents are like greenhouses - they stop the heat escaping via convection etc so a tent that you can open up on two sides/ends and get a through draft is much better but there's not many around that do.

Space blankets would have some effect as would anything that darkens the interior, like a regular blanket or tarp/ground sheet, but I think the main thing is preventing the heat accumulating greenhouse style and for that it's all about ventilation.

The secret is just go get out of your tent and sleep on the grass adjacent to it for the mid-morning "special sleep" phase!

yeah, woke up at like 8, covered in sweat and couldnt breathe, so i had to stick my head out the tent every couple of mins lol

The trick with hot tents is simple. Get out of them. Use the porch for shade for your head, and sleep outside...

Thats all true, but with a decent insulator, be it foil or blankets it doesn't get hot in the first place. My aim is not to be woken up by the heat

True too but I think the 'decent' insulator is easier said than done and if it isn't completely effective you'll soon get heat buiild up again. I'm all ears though - what do you use?

Oh dear, I dont want this to turn onto one rambling back and forth bickering.

I think I may have said it above. Before I go to Glasto I tape around 4 space blankets together, their insulation is around 98% efficient. I put proper eyelets in them, then use shock cord connected to guy ropes to use them as a second fly sheet, stretched fairy taught, that helps keeps the noise down. The tent never actually heats up.

It works ok for me.

Sorry I missed your earlier post - interesting that you've managed to tailor space blankets that way. I might give it a try at glade fest in a couple of weeks if it's looking hot again.

I've never understood why tent manufacturers dont make reflective tents that reflect the heat, surely they would make a killing at the summer festivals?

I've thought about buying a new tent with UV treated material, which should reduce the buildup of heat.

i never slept past 7.30, it was just way too hot! we even had a ventilation zip thing at the back of the tent but it didn't make much difference.

i'd bought a new 3 season mummy sleeping bag especially aswell which was roasting! every morning i woke up in a sweat and then it took me 5 mins to get out of the bloody thing cos it had no zip! i felt trapped!

This thread is just what I've been thinking and telling people all week about Glasto.

It kinda f**ked my glasto up by not getting hardly any sleep whatesover, I made the effort to go to bed but just couldn't sleep, usually it's not a problem, this year was the hottest I've ever been in a tent and it was early to like 7am.

Not sharing with anyone either next year, going to get a vango that opens at both ends then I can have a nice draught blowing through.

I had a really decent kip curled up in a corner of the real ale tent thursday afternoon - out the sun, pleasant breeze and the gentle aroma of ale. Bliss. Reckon we might move the real ale meet next year though? Why I think 2 cans of guinness for breakfast on the way to it then 4 pints of eminently quaffable ale was a good plan Ive no idea - I couldn't have handled that 20 years ago!!

I tried one of those reflective sheets this year, and it was still unbearably baking and humid in the mornings... although I don't know if it would have been worse without it.

But, as per my usual style, I didn't do it properly! I used just one sheet (although I had another too... still in the packet) which I haphazardly placed sort of where I thought the morning sun would be, and tied yellow string to each corner which hooked onto the tent pegs. The main drawback was the sun came in at the back of the tent, so that's where the sheet was - and so it covered up the ventlation hole! I took more care tying up my bunting!

The rustley noise didn't bother me at all. The continuousness of it was quite soothing, and masked the more random noises that normally wake me. I might do it next year just for the sound effect!

And yes, it was lovely being so mild at night times!

Gotta just agree with those who are pro-space blankets - I regularly slept in until about eleven in the morning. Yes, it eventually got unbearable, but those extra few hours of sleep really helped me keep going through every day of the fest. It certainly beat having to get up about an hour after going to bed!

And if you're in Pennards or another of the fairly central, popular campsites the rustling of space blankets is never going to be the loudest thing you can hear!
