Judging by your photograph (nice mane) I would reckon you are mid 30's early 40's, but yet you prescribe to a past time that teenagers trying to impress their peers indulge in and very quickly grow out off. 1. The obvious: drugs are illegal therefore possession, distribution are crimes. Obviously legalisation would wipe this factor out.

2. Organised crime at the production/wholesale end of the supply chain - we're talking large scale corruption, bribery, blackmail, assault, murder, exploitation

3. Turf wars at the dealer level

4. Crimes committed by addicts to support their habit

I do think drug use should be discouraged. I think it'll keep happening, and discouraging it will keep most people to a reasonable level (see alcohol). But I think the best way to discourage it is within a framework of legality.
