no metal/rock (admit it)

when is everyone going to admit that r and l are not going to cater for the metal/rock fan this tear???

when rumours started at the beginning of the year we were told that they were only rumours and to wait for the announcement.when the rumoured indie (ish) bands were confirmed we were told to wait until the other stages were announced.when this didnt include many rock bands we were promised 'something special that would make up for the lack of rock day' by one of the organisers in a rock sound interview(cant be arsed to look for the exact quote but its defo out there somewhere).other than FNM and possibly lostprophets this also didnt materialise.the latest ones doing the rounds are that the FR stages will have so good rock bands or that they are waiting til download finishes to announce some rock bands.

i personally have given up on the idea of any decent rock/metal bands playing and i suggest my fellow rockers do the same otherwise we'll end up driving up to reading on the thurs before the festival with a 'secret metal band is making a surprise guest appearance' rumour going round.ha ha.

Another thread on this? Really?

The fact is there is more metal/punk/hard rock this year than many previous years, you just have to look a bit harder for it.

Here is the quote you are thinking of

'once we announce the Lock-Up Stage and announce two Radio 1 stage headliners that are both huge rock acts people will see how rounded it is.'

They have kept their word on it have they not?

All that will follow is the same old "they're not obliged to book metal/rock acts" and "Go to Download/Sonisphere for metal"

To preempt that 1)If you're selling "early-bird" tickets for a year following Metallica/RATM etc. Yes. You are obliged to, because that's what the people buying these tickets are expecting. and 2) I am thanks, but for the past 7 years Reading has had massive hard rock/metal acts high on the mainstage and headlining, and there was no reason to suspect this year was going to be any different.

i think that it is a pretty heavy lineup bar the headliners although possibly not as much as previous years.

there are 10 bands (or so) that are also playing download as well as the lock up tent and a few heavy bands dotted around lower main and nme. there will also be a few heavier bands announced i'm sure. maybe main, and nme but FR and introducing too.

if a huge metal band had been headlining instead of say arctic monkeys then i'm not so sure there would be much of a not enough metal cry.

like someone has mentioned this year you will have to do your homework a bit more and move around the stages.

im inclined to listen to mainly 'indie' music (that is another thread altogether!!) but listen to a bit of everything. last year i only saw about 6/7 bands on the main stage. i think this year will be a bit like that for metal fans whereas i will spend a lot more time on main stage this year.

Good way of looking at it - for years fans of non metal at Reading and Leeds have been used to moving between the main, NME, Fr, Dance tent etc whilst the metal fans have had the lock up and main stage. This year that has changed and metal fans will have to check out the NME stage and FR stage as well. Why should metal be restricted to the biggest stage?

I'm not sure there is a need for another thread but I agree there still is a big lack of metal/rock and I still feel agreived that I bought a ticket like many others on here thinking that I would be attending a rock festival.

There isn't any metal on the NME stage and its doubtful if there will be much on the FR. Even the Lock Up stage is full of ska/punk/lighter bands and not much in the way of metal.

The only real heavier bands this year are Deftones, Municipal Waste, Gallows, The Bronx, Wilhelm Scream and Faith No More?

I understand the whole there was no Green Day/AC/DC available to headline which obviously changed the way they have set out the main stage but what annoys me is that the spaces where heavier bands could have played on the other stages are filled similar types of music or pop bands like Fall Out Boy, You Me at Six, Madina Lake Fightstar etc.

I will only be a matter of time before they give the metal fans Elliot Minor and Metro Station. :D

I reckon if they changed the order of the bands there wouldn't be as many people complaining.

Metallica ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Faith No More

Tenacious D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The Prodigy

Slipknot ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lostprophets

Feeder ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Placebo

Avenged Sevenfold -------------------------------------------------------------------- Deftones

Dropkick Murphys ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral for a Friend

Or, y'know, something like that anyway. Apart from those, there was who? Rage, Queens and Serj Tanken who also constitute as 'heavy', and I reckon they've tried to make up for them by putting more bands like AFI and Gallows on the bill. They aren't as 'heavy' as Rage et al, no, but it looks like they went for strength in numbers over big names this year in that department.

Lack of big name metal/rockier/more alternative acts ye - pity they couldn't have booked Tool and/or The Offspring and/or Janes Addiction and/or Weezer seeing as they all seem to be or were available or even someone a bit smaller like Killswitch or Mastodon on main for a bit of balance - but;

If you ignore the wow factor of Rage and Metallica at the same fest - what was there last year;

QOTSA (who were absolute shit last year anyway), Slipknot & Avenged Sevefold (who didn't actually play), Bullet For My Valentine, Serj Tankien; and Tenacious D who regardless of how good they may have been, are a joke band who only got the slot because they're fronted by a hollywood megastar.

Year before there was Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails and Lostprophets - before that, Pearl Jam, Slayer, Bullet, Killswitch and Mastodon - before that QOTSA again, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson and Bullet again...

The fest was only full of metal acts when nu-metal was the big thing - when Kerrang was like proper mainstream for a bit - as I said in my first sentence, FR do seem to have slipped up in not including that many big alternative/heavier acts, but I don't really understand what some people seem to have been expecting....

weezer and JA are great rock bands who appeal to a lot of metal/rock fans.most would be happy with a few more of these type bands,when we say we want more rock/metal we dont necessarily mean a heavy metal band with hair down to their arse,headbanging to screaming guitar solos.
