stopping smoking

Cold turkey. Just acknowledging your last cig is as powerful a tool as any nicotine replacement product. nicotine's out of your system in a few days (3ish) anyway, so why bother with replacement products that cost a furtune, when after a few days its all in your head anyway?

Alan carr's little book of quiting is great, if a tad arrogant!

Last time I mentioned smoking I came in for the worst abuse I have ever had on these boards, shocking it was, absolutely shocking.

That said, I gave up almost exactly 6 years ago, I gave up using a drug called Zyban. I had minimal if any cravings with this and in 6 years I have had a drag of one cigar and 2 toots on a bifter and both made me cough and feel like throwing up, basically no relapses.

Zyban was prescribed to me after going to a help to quit clinic. The side effects for me, and it varies obviously, but for me it shot my short term memory, midway through a sentence my mind went blank, I would trail off not knowing what I was on about, and also night terrors, I was suffering a little bit with them anyway but in 2002 they got worse.

I would recommend Zyban, I was a 30 a day smoker, my mother, a 40 a day smoker gave up via hypnosis, it worked for her and she hasn’t gone back in around 5 years.

Good on you! I shall be happy to make 6 years. Having tried a few treatments, I had thought about Zyban, but the Night Terrors thing doesn't sound good.

Why were you abused in the last non smoking thread? Are you an ex smoker who now hates smokers? I can see how that may have provoked a reaction with some....

My doctor's offered me Zyban to stop smoking but I'm a bit wary of it. Did a bit of research on it and found that it was apparently originally produced as an anti-depressant. I used to take anti-depressants (fluoxetine) for other reasons and am concerned that if I take Zyban I'll have some sort of relapse type thingy.

Did it effect your moods at all? And did it increase your night terrors much?

I think that was the one my mate was on. He seemed to think it was dangerous and changed his personality, especially if he had a drink.

I'll check with him, but there is one that is dangerous.

edit : f**k he's in the States. There was one that made him go loopy, and it was on prescription - and I think it's almost a recognised side-effect.

I didn’t really take it to heart to be honest, I have been posting on here for around 4 years and that was the first time I had suffered any backlash, possibly fair, possibly not, didn’t think the abuse fitted the crime but you know, one of them things.

Now back to the original thread, smoking will seem like a right hardship to give up and believe me if there was a fag that was cheap and didn’t harm, I would be back there like a shot, I have already told my wife I am starting smoking again when I am 70. What I would recommend is seeking out a help to quit clinic.

Zyban played with my moods a bit, but that may have been due to the withdrawal, I didnt have cravings but I knew something was missing, and thats part of the psychology, Something was missing.

I will say this, dont give up at someone elses request, give up because you want to.

Cheers  . Did it mess with your moods at all? After reading the stuff about it on here it sounds like zyban's not worth the risk for me. Might try out the book when I decide to quit (again), that seems to have worked for a few people.

I gave up in June last year but have since relapsed several times. I just went completely cold turkey at first and it worked for ages. But now everytime i go out and get drunk i crave it even more than before (possibly also down to the fact i dont drink much now).

But i have to agree with most of whats been said before, its more about breaking habits. Alsthough also the people around you help as where i work now and my friends who i go out with dont smoke so im not surrounded by smokers.

Good luck everyone (and me)

Gave up last September on Champix & the support of these lovely people on here. :D

It doesn't cause the mood swings as Zyban does I found the nausea was unbelievable. Was the projectile vomiting of morning sickness. I ended up setting my alarm for the middle of the night, taking the tablet, nibbling on a dry biscuit, and going back to sleep. Was the only way I could keep the medication down. Nausea lasted for just under 2 weeks then it was ok. No other side effects for me. Won't say it was a doddle giving up using Champix but it certainly works..

Not had a fag since

Different horses for different courses though. What works for one person may not work for the next. There's loads of stop smoking aids available, some are free !!! You just have to find the right one for you.

I'm having a go on Champix after Reading Festy. I have decided. My only problem is when I'm pissed, I cant resist. I have quit many times before, but always relapsed in a drunken stupour.

I might give it a real good hard try.
