stopping smoking

Mr Cheese almost promised me he was going to quit last night. I told him not to do that, don't promise. Was that the wrong thing for me to do?? It's just a promise means a lot to me and if he broke it, I'd be mad. I don't make promises I can't keep, not without very good reason anyway.

He's heard of Champix but his mate who used it started smoking again so he's not convinced.

I think this is going to be a very long road......

Just seen this thread and thought i'd add my wee bit in

I havent smoked since sept/oct, still puffing away when I'm drunk, though not anywhere near as much! 3 or 4 on a night out after that they make me feel a bit sicky.

I'm determined to give them up completley. My boyfriends dad passed away in December only 6 weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer, if thats not enough to make people want to quit then I don't know what is.

Day one.

Last night I got a text warning me that today was the day he was going to quit so I was to be warned that he may become a little grumpy. I also spoke to him late last night but he was drunken and not making much sense but somewhere in the madness I worked out that he was saying he was sorry if he was horrible whilst trying to quit. I sent him a text earlier saying I didn't want to make him think of that thing he's giving up but hope he's doing ok with it. His text back says he is doing ok and that he's having a laugh at work today with ****. All good so far. He's coming over to see me tonight so if I don't post tomorrow you know it will be because he has bitten my head off.....

Glastofreak and I started champix on 15th Feb, you don't stop smoking with them until day 8 - 14 but I have to say that I am smoking a lot less down from 20 a day to 50 over 11 days! I am going to stop tomorrow as will be 40 on friday and it is my present to myself

Katster tell mr cheese we have two mates who both used champix one who has tried everything patchs, gum, acupunture and hypnosis and she went bak to smoking and another who hasn't smoked in a year so if he doesn't manage it on his own they seem to work. Will let you know soon I guess.

Well I am now on 4weeks and 1 day as a non smoker. Champix has done a great job for me.

I'll let him know. As far as I'm aware he's attempting it by himself but if he's struggling I'll suggest trying champix. I have mentioned it to him before but his mate who used it started smoking again so he doesn't rate it in his experience.

Fingers crossed, his texts today have all seemed friendly enough, even the one telling me he's going to be an hour or so later than planned because he's got to drop someone off....(normally something that would piss him off even if he was still smoking )

No I have gone from 20 a day to 50 over an 11 day period so I think that is about 4.5 fags a day

I wish him all the best, my new boss used to be a cessation worker so she is being really supportive.

Ahhh, I thought you meant from 20 a day to 50 a day

He did very well yesterday, but he did have one cigarette just before bed. He gets really stingy eyes because of the tablets he's on and cigarettes seem to sort it (as odd as that sounds). I was proud of him for only having one though, and I can't really blame him when we were having a drink and that's when he really likes smoking.

hate to be a naysayer Kat, but he aint gonna quit like that IMHO. Having "just one" aint quitting, in fact it will make him worse (nerves and temper - wise) he needs the nicotine addiction beaten before he can even begin to deal with the habit, nicotine withdrawal normally lasts 4 days or so, and if his body is getting one fag a day - thats enough for the nicotine addiction to remain.

if he's quitting because he thinks he wants to quit - he is wasting his time. If he knows he wants to stop, and isnt in the "just one before bed" mindset - he should stand a much better chance.

I don't really know how he got on yesterday as I was busy drinking wine and eating far too many munchies with my pal. I'll find out tonight I guess, if he turns up with a packet of tobacco on him, I'll know he's not done very well (he said he wasn't going to buy anymore).

you know you should. I bought myself a brand new top of the range phone last week, with the money I saved from my first 3 weeks of not smoking.

And seriously - you really dont know how f**king horrible you smell, trust me. When I am in the boozer and my mates come back in from a fag break - they can be stood within 8 feet of me and they f**king reek - not just a faint whaft - full on f**king stench - its easy to forget that when you have been smoking for 20 years. that alone would make you stop.
