What food are you taking?

Obviously the food at the festival is cracking but I'm working on a budget this year and hopefully won't be buying too much when I'm there.

Don't think we're taking a stove of any kind so currently my ideas stretch as far as pringles, cereal bars, haribo and lots of water. Any ideas for things that are easily packable, will last a few days in the tent, and are perhaps even nutritious?

Take bananas , variety of dried mixed nuts and sultanas, maybe some fruit and fibre type cereal, and then buy some milk and yeoman yoghurt onsite every day. works any time of day as breakfast, fruit cocktail, and late night snacking on the nuts. Wasabi nuts also, very moorish

Snackbars and a box of cereal.

I tend to start my day with cereal with some fresh milk on site, washed down with some orange juice, then snack on bars until late afternoon, when I'll get a big meal.

+1 for the large oggie, great value, eat some, wrap it in the bag, stick it in a pocket and return later.

Just the ingredients for an egg and bacon butty in the morning.I do find breakfast the most challenging at G,the queues are the longest and all the staff are in a coma, bless em.So if I can cut that hassle out but I eat at the stalls for all my other meals.

Bring a bag of almonds and a bag of dried fruit for each day you'll be there.

The almonds will help you to maintain good levels of blood sugar through the day, which will help to prevent crashes or slumps in energy.

And dried fruit is delicious and will satisfy your sweet cravings without making you feel bloated.

+1 for the cereals, a big box of cornflakes or Wheetabix and milk bought every morning from the milkman that comes round and you are set up for the first half of everyday for not a great deal of money. Not so sure about the cereal bars, Pringles, Mars bars and nuts though these type of snacking food tend to work out quite expensive and not very filling, plus the salted snacks will probably mean you will just spend more on drinks either taken or bought on site. Also with self heating food you end up paying a huge premium for the convenience and to be honest they often are not very nice.

If you can take a small gas cooker some bacon, sausage and eggs for the first couple of days and then after a few tins of beans, packets of instant soups and noodles will help fill a bit of a hole.

I do recommend that you don't miss out completely on the festival food though, to me the range of food available and new things to try are something I look forward to almost as much as some of the bands, it's as much a food festival as it is a music and art one. Also a lot of it is reasonably good value and me and the misses often buy one between us and share it. Just have a good look around choose where you eat carefully based on size of portions vs price and you can still eat quite cheaply. As mentioned earlier the Oggie pasty stall is a good place to start, they are massive, made for sharing and reasonably priced. If you still think you can't afford to buy food on site and don't want to eat the free stuff handed out by the Haris Krishna's some of the food stalls will give you free meals if you do a bit of work for them (washing up and stuff) I believe the Budda cafe are one of the ones that does this, but I might be wrong on that, but I am sure someone else on here can direct you to eating places which do offer food for work.

I am slightly worried that the food prices at Glastonbury will have shot up- it's been two years since the last one, and I've really noticed the rise in food prices in that time- 75p for a packet of Monster Munch?! What is the world coming to!

I usually take a loaf of bread and some nut bars for breakfast, plus some healthy mars bars, custard creams and crisps for when I'm peckish between meals. I usually buy a vegetable pasty for lunch, and then some sort of tasty veggie fare for my tea. Señor Moon by west holts usually has a veggie burger and spicy wedges (the nicest chips on site!) for a good price. Oh and a bag of opal fruits for if I get the munchies.

I try to eat as healthily as I can...

It is like a massive, flattened cornish pastie with the ridge all around a crescent shape, making it easy to hold to eat.

They contain lamb or mutton, root vegetables, onions and gravy and it is a bit like having a hot sunday dinner chopped up inside a pastie. They rule.

There are more than one oggie stand at glastonbury these days, run by different people so it isn't a consistent product everywhere as recipes can vary. I've always found the one that tends to be situated near holts to be particularly high quality and I will, as I say, eat about half, then wrap it and pop it, still hot, into a cargo shorts pocket and finish it up later. Excellent value as a meal, not messy to eat and really filling.

If you don't want to take a cooker consider a disposable barbecue, less that a couple of quid each, light weight and ideal for a few sausages, a bit of gammon, mushrooms and tomatos on skewers etc. a couple of these and you'll be set up for the first couple of days. Still need a pan though if you want an egg with it, they tend to drop through the wires otherwise and get a bit too crunchy :P

As someone has already said, Buddhafields will feed you in return for an hour's washing up. Look for the 50p tea tent if you want, er, a cheap cup of tea! Other bargains are the Street Sub Aqua stall near the Kidz Field (good for breakfast) and the cafe in the Permaculture area. Lots of stalls will sell their wares cheaper late at night - we once got BOGOF Square Pies at 2am! And don't buy water - the tap water on site is perfectly safe and drinkable.

But yeah, despite all that, bascially Oggies are the best value food on the whole site!

+1 on the disposable bbq as well. If you freeze your meat, freeze a few bottles of water and stick that in a spaceblanket you have a simple coolbox, all it needs is a couple of carrier bags around it and then when you get onsite you can defrost the meat, use the water and coolbox to chill your cans for Wednesday evening.

I always feel bad after eating an Oggie.

Not because they're in any way nasty, simply because normal people seem to get full and have some left over for later. Me, I wolf mine down and still have room to have a bit of my wife's. basically I love them but I feel like a guilty fat bastard after having one.
