I get universal benefits... The ones you have little to no choice over I have previously stated that I don't think I should get child benefit and I wouldn't compain if it went completely.

If you are at the point where you are struggling to put the heating on, food on the table and buy clothes... Adding a kid to that mix is almost certainly irresponsible...

So someone on tax credits wouldn't nesscary be in this situation...

What got this start is Tony saying while being on his arse he gave no thought to if he should have a kid or not.

I think a discussion about whether financial consideration should dictate whether someone has a child is a difficult one. I currently have one child but with money tight we have made the decision not to have 2 at present. Im not sure how much extra money we would get, but in my opinion there are people who need that money more than we do. I have no doubt that there are many people who think about finances when having children and I dont think thats a bad thing.

However it should also be noted that in our cirrcumstances we could make sacrafices which would mean that we could have a second child eg move to a cheaper house, spend less on luxuries, reduce spending on the childs clothes, foods, toys etc. Having a child is only as expensive as you are willing to let it and I have seen very loving parents who have brought up children with little money, while on the opposite end richer people who use their money to ensure they have to spend as little time with their children as possible.

I also know that for some people dont have the wriggle room in terms of finances that I do and cant make changes to free up money to support a child. I think stopping these people from having children would be disgraceful and am happy for tax payers to contribute to this process. I have to admit I do think in these circumstances their should be some element of social responsibility of how many children people have if they cannot afford to bring them up themselves. However we should never punish the children and when someone on benefits have 5 or 6 children, as taxpayers I think we have to take it on the chin.
