pub or car parks?

I'm booked in a b&b in Shepton Malelt the night before, plan on leaving the place around 3 in the morning to head to east car parks. Problem I have with that I'm afraid I'll overindulge and will still be drunk by the time it's time to drive.

My other idea is to park in the west and then head on over to Pilton for a few drinks and then head back to the car parks.

It's only a mile or so walk, very doable in less than 30 minutes. But...

Will they let me walk out of the car parks?

Will they let me back on foot to get to my car?

Generally crap idea to walk along the A road for a mile, at night?

Will the pub in Pilton be open on Tuesday evening?

Any other ideas on not spending Tuesday night in car parks after leaving my car there?

There used to be a lot of trouble in the past with people getting drunk and hanging around the village. So the village pub doesn't open anymore (this might be different this year) as good faith to the villagers.

Theres the apple tree which is near the car park entrance and is usually the festival pub, but I don't think it will be open very late (I think midnight would be your limit).

I also know that people hung around until late in the local tesco the night before, and police had to be called.

In answer to your questions:

1. Yes they will let you walk out, but who knows if you'll be able to walk back in to collect your stuff

2. answer above

3. as someone who drives that road often, do not walk along it. however, it will be a lot safer that night as more police security etc. I just wouldn't suggest it.

4.nope.

Can I suggest you just hold off the booze for one night and sleep in your car?

I don't think people realise but everyone arriving early and hanging around the village is actually a major problem. I'm not talking theft (which does happen and security was more than trebled because of it) but its just a massive hassle. The village has to go on lock down for two weeks. We come to expect roads to be busy and maybe the supermarkets to run out of things, but I do think its unfair that the village (which is meant to be out of bounds to festival goers) gets the bum deal.

I am not complaining but I really think people need to consider that they are hanging around peoples homes and a village that is very quiet the rest of the year. I am not saying that you or anyone else on this forum would in any way want to inconvenience villagers, but the more people who think its okay to turn up early the more will come.

I am only voicing what the festival has to listen to all year, you have to realise that the festival does go through planning permission and issues like this (not you mate, I apologise for taking over your thread) make all more of a strong case to those who appose it. The local police a few years ago to my knowledge were reluctant to continue to help the festival with the problems in the village and surrounding areas. Thats partly why there is the private security firms on site.

The earlier people come, the more stuff like this costs and then your ticket will go up in price. The carpark is there for you, hundreds of others will be there and make a party of it in your car, you cannot surely be that desperate for booze that you want to hang out in our grimy pubs ;)

Thanks for the insight! I see your points about people descending on the village. I imagine I'd be pretty pissed in a similar situation...

All of these are grandiose plans which may go down the toilet though... Unlike the previous years, this time around because of work, I won't be able to come to UK early to get used to the time difference. It'll be a pretty tough day - fly in the morning, hop in the car, two-ish hour drive... for all I know, I'll simply fall asleep as soon as I get there. I have a feeling that waking up in morning will suck as well when your body is five hours behind the actual time.

I was going to say just join the queue early doors and have a few drinks but if you're going to be jet lagged then perhaps a swift half and a decent kip in a proper bed may be a better bet. Don't want to spend half the fest feeling rough for the sake of a few pints in the pub on the Tuesday.

Pilton Poppet - I thought your post was insightful, well put and well argued. Thanks for sharing your views.

I've been scouring the official site to doublecheck when the campervan fields open and when the gates to the festival open but I can't find the details anymore. Does anyone have a link or know the answers?

Hezzrah, I'd arrive at the pub, have a couple, get a good nights sleep and head to the festival when you're relaxed and refreshed in the morning. This obsession of getting there at silly o'clock before the gates open is getting ridiculous IMHO and just causes the festival more problems. (Not just directed at you by the way)

Pilton Poppet I always find your posts very useful and good to read about the festival from someone who lives in the villages point of view,

In regards to herzzerh what I would do (not sure if been suggested) get into the car park when you can, then have a few hours sleep, que, get onto site set up, have a few hours if possible, then just power through till that night, I know it will be hard but i've had to do that when travelling to the USA

To echo Pilton Poppets post, it would not be a good idea to walk up to the pub and an even worse one to walk back down. The A361 can be quite lively on Tuesday night, cars full of people who have driven from distance and they may not be paying full attention. A few usually are surprised by the bend outside my house. There is no path for the most of it and security will not let you cut through the village even if you knew where you were going. It may be quite a terminal experience. The walk to the Appletree is not much better but you will probably make it alive and save yourself the hill.

I have no idea if the pub will decide to open but it would be better to save yourself the disappointment and hang one on at the car.

    • Very different in terms of time of game,  yet remember how excited I was before the first game in Euro 2016 having grown up not sure I would ever see wales in an international tournament. That day scraped a win against Slovakia and was just happy to see wales score and win at a tournament, little did I know we would finish in the top 4. Hope Scottish fans get the same experience.
