I'm not a massive Kraftwerk fan but there's no denying they were influential, and remain so today.

Kraftwerk weren't even the first with the electronic music 'thang'. John Cage, Stockhausen, Terry Riley Waler Carlos... even Pink Floyd had been playing around with that stuff before.

I have nothing against Kraftwerk. I'm just curious as to why, when some bands anounce some shows, there are cries of "oh why do they bother, why don't they just pack it in", whereas with Kraftwerk, they are positively lauded.... (by some of the same people)

Kraftwerk are directly cited by the pioneers of House, Techno and Hip-Hop(You could definitely argue that perhaps Hip-Hop would have emerged anyway since it was a direct descendent of Soul and Funk as well).

And those music forms permeate 90% of pop music these days, for better or worse.

it would all have happened anyway. Certain artists might have been encouraged to do what they do because Kraftwerk happened to be the first artists they heard doing it, but if they were at all interested in it, they'd have got there anyway.

The Beatles, The Stones, Pink Floyd, not influential at all.

There are very few truly influential artists.. most of anything is part of a much bigger context. All the claims that this or that wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the existence of so and so (Kraftwerk, for example), is verging on hysterical hyperbole most of the time.

Yeah they were. It may have happened, as Morrison says below, but not in the same way. Dylan was a Woody Guthrie acolyte, and then he took it further. Just as Guthrie was influenced by whatever dustbowl musicians he encountered, as Da Vinci was influenced by Verrocchio etc Theres always continuity. Kraftwerk too.
