Digital camera for glastonbury

Guest LawskiHoopza

Recommended Posts

I want to buy a digital camera for glastonbury, around the £70 price range, simple to use.10-14 mega pixels.

I would especially like to take some decent night time shots, nothing too fancy,I will probably be fairly drunk by this time so nothing too complicated to use!

Any recommendations?

Thanks

My new camera arrived today!

I went for a Fujifilm Finepix JX530 - 14 Megapixels and 5x zoom. Had good reviews when I searched Google etc.

Bought it on e-bay for £64 new, including an 8GB SD card. What's more they accidentally included 2 batteries!! They must've known I neede a spare at Glasto! :)

Seems like a good deal, so thought I should share ;)

Night and stage pics tip!

Flash only lights up 10 feet away or so. So if you're taking photos of something that close, then fine, leave the flash on.

Otherwise -- if you want a shot of the stage, or a general view, turn the flash off. Not only will the flash not reach what you want to photograph, but the camera will adjust its sensitivity for flash brightness, and just capture a load of black.

And hold the camera *very* steady in low light.

spot on. And for bonus points, most cameras have a mode which will do both...I think its usually labelled slow-sync flash. This will illuminate your friends nearby with flash, whilst also allowing a long enough shutter speed to capture the Pyramid Stage in the background (as long as you hold the camera stead)

I like wide angle, so I'd look for something that has a 24mm equivalent lens - really helps not only encompassing the scale of the event, but lets you get decent pictures when still quite close, such as of your friends in crowds, or of crafts etc where there's lots of people standing around so you're right up next to it.

This picture shows you an idea of the extra you get - the those sides you get do make quite a difference between 35 and 24mm.

Friends; would have missed the two on the outside without this wide angle

Don't get overly focused on megapixels. 3mp will print out a very good A4 print if it's got a decent lens etc. As most pictures will probably get viewed at much lower resolutions on the web, it shouldn't be a big issue.

Whatever you get, consider getting a spare battery or two and get the fully charged up before leaving.

Had a quick look around and were it me, I'd try and find another £30 and get this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Casio-Exilim-EX-H5-Digital-Camera/dp/B003OUWGM8/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1304676637&sr=1-3

Wide angle, but 10x zoom too, so you can get decently in to stages etc (keep it for day time, though.) It's also decently compact so should be eminently pocketable.

Was just having a quick google and really like the look of the Samsung WB650 for a do-everything compact, but over your budget at £154 and I've got too many cameras as it is, so no more for me!

I traded my old fuji in to get £70 off a new £200 canon powershot sx210. 14 mp and 14 x optical zoom. MInt pictures for a compact. Bit out of your price range but maybe a good option to trade in if you've got an old working camera lying around

I've been looking into buying a new compact camera specifically for a couple of festivals I'm going to this summer but I want something with full HD recording. I've had my eye on the Panasonic Lumix TZ20 as it seems to tick all the boxes but I wondered if anyone has experience of any other digital compacts that are good for filming in full HD at festivals? I've found that the sound often distorts on other compacts I've had so I want something that will give a really good sound quality as well as an excellent picture.

If you want to do low light you need good high ISO support. The higher ISO value the more sensitive to light. Problem is smaller cameras will always have poorer ISO capabilities due to their sensor size. Some do a lot to compensate in software but once you go over a certain ISO setting you'll see a lot of noise. Whatever camera you get test it at its various ISO settings and find at which point the noise becomes too noticeable for you. Try not use it beyond that no matter how good it looks on the screen of the camera at the time. A lot of screens are fairly low resolution and your own state of mind will probably help blur any imperfections a lot until you get the photos home.

Here is an example of what I'm talking about image442.jpg.

This was with a Sony Cybershot at 3200 iso. Yes I was drunk and didn't keep it steady but at the time I thought this was going to be a good photo. There was enough light here that if I took my time and used a lower ISO setting I could have got something half decent... maybe.

Thing is the stone circle at night will be the hardest thing to photo at Glastonbury. Intoxications aside it is mostly candle lit and very difficult to capture. Here is a good photo of the Stone Circle from the excellent The Big Picture. g10_19491953.jpg.

Even with what is probably a pro camera you can see the candles are blurred from the use of a slower shutter speed. You won't do that with a 70 quid camera but you probably don't want to.

Someone else will be out there taking the fancy arty photos and I'm sure you just want to get a few good snaps of yourself and mates having fun. Just know your cameras limitations so you don't waste your time, battery, and card space taking photos of things you can't. Majority of the rest of Glasto's late night stuff is well lit so you shouldn't have a problem with a steady hand and an eye for the right moment.

I own a Fujifilm FinePix AV110 Digital Camera - Black (12 MP, 3x Optical Zoom) 2.7 inch LCD

although

Tried the camera with Duracell's but would only recommend for emergency use.

Hunted about so got a very good price on Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA Batteries 4 Pack { + 2 Free } for £4.49 which is ideal for this camera.

Lithium lasts up to 8 times longer compared to ordinary Alkaline so they are ideal for this camera.

Amazingly the batteries I bought have a use by date of 2023 so no worries over being out of power - Energizer claim up to 680 photos although I cant verify that is accurate - even if its only 500 photos its still better value compared to Alkaline

The ability to use AA Batteries was a big selling point for me as I am a WBC organiser in the summer and volunteer at outdoor festivals so it can be a big hassle at some events finding a stable power supply hence why I was not keen on a camera that only used a rechargeable power pack.

Its a shame there is only 3 x optical zoom { equivalent to 32 - 96mm on a 35mm camera } but Fuji tends to use that factor as standard on their basic cameras.

When you switch on digital zoom its up to 18.9 × when combined with optical zoom

By the way if your after a 5 x optical zoom check out FUJI FinePix AX200.

I bought a Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card at £8.35

Transcend 8GB SDHC Class 10 Memory Card

A few people have reported problems on HD recording freezing but they don't make it clear what Memory Card class they were using - I have had no problems with my Class 10 Memory Card.

It would have been better if Fuji had enclosed a paper instruction book although as I am a keen photographer I find the menu easy to use - for some reason the pdf version would not load on my Computer but the version direct from the Fuji website did display correctly.

Images are as good as my Fuji F10 { which cost me over £ 200 a few years ago } and the HD Recordings are Excellent.

If you buy this camera you will soon discover that trying to find a suitable case { with belt loop } a bit tricky but if you search using google with the following line ' CC039 Camera Case For Fujifilm Finepix ' you will soon spot a case with the dimension (Approx.): W 65 x H 105 x D 30 mm for a Buy Now price of £3.99 { postage free } on a famous auction site - now on paper this would appear not to be the correct size but trust me the camera fits like a glove and it looks a very neat case - just right and well worth £ 4.

It may suit someone who prefers the camera to do the work although camera buffs will find lots of options so they can be creative so its not just a bog standard point and shoot.

When you add it all up this is a very good camera for a very small price.

Highly recommended and the HD recordings will blow you away.

Sure there is far more higher spec cameras out there but for the price you really cant go wrong.

    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
