I first heard Oh Bondage Up Yours on the John Peel Show when I was about 16 and I remember how excited it made me feel. I couldn't believe someone had actually made a record like that. "Thrash me, crash me, beat me 'til I fall. I wanna be a slave to you all" Taking things that bit further made X-Ray Spex one of the stand-out bands of the punk era. Nobody ever matched them; nobody ever could.

She ripped up the rule book and unwittingly wrote a few new rules herself; something that today's fame-hungry talent show wannabies couldn't even comprehend.

This is a very sad day indeed

She released her third (I think) solo album about a month ago - Generation Indigo. Her voice had mellowed over the years and she sounds incredibly like Debbie Harry on a number of those tracks.

She will be sadly missed. A lot of my teenage heroes are kicking the bucket now. It sucks getting old. :(
