Mobile phone apps at festivals?

I was just wondering how people felt about mobile apps for festivals? Good idea? Pointless?

I'm doing my uni dissertation on this topic and want to find out people's opinions. If anyone has any thoughts on the matter please let me know. I have an online survey too which I'd be really grateful if people filled out, it literally takes 2 minutes!

Thanks!

As an iphone user I actually don't take it to festivals, due to the fact that I am terrified of it getting broken or nicked. As a result I personally would find it pointless! I know a lot of people don't take their decent phones and just rely on crappy old Nokia phones with spare batteries.

I'm not clicking your link because I've done this before and it let all manner of nasty things get on my hard drive (not off efestivals!)

very soon, they'll be an iPhone/iPod/iPad app for the eFestivals forums - it's already been submitted to the Apple store, and now I'm just waiting for them to list it. When it's available I'll make sure that people know. :)

There's also an Android app for the efests forums coming at some time in the near-ish future too, before anyone asks. However, I'm not currently able to give any idea of exactly when.

There's also a mobile version of the full efestivals website that's currently in development, and which hopefully will be launched within a month.

How much cut are Apple taking now - is it 30% or something? Sounds like a good way to promote efests though what with everyone seemingly owning a device with one of these OS'es on it.

Remember having a discussion with you couple of years back Neil about apps on mobiles as a concept and you mentioned that you felt that they were essentially just an interim solution before full Internet access on mobiles (when fully featured browsers, decent mobile bandwidth and processing power arrive on them). Now with cloud services, business mobiles are essentially being repositioned as client portals for these on-line apps, so it may be the case this will begin to happen more in the private mobile market too soon enough.

I've personally had very little involvement in the app being done, so my knowledge is limited. But the app will be free, so there's no cut for Apple to take.

I still believe that apps are something which will have a short-ish life-span. But with the whole app thing having developed as it has, it's something which will last longer than I was initially anticipating, just because the commercial side of things will cause those commercial developers to try and drag it out as long as they can to commercially exploit it as long as they can.
