The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes, one of the most authentic and down-right groovin', joint smoking, boogie tastic, southern sliding mofos of a band on the planet (yes, I like them!) are playing Bilbao festival in Spain the week after Glasto - what do we think the chances are? I think they've played before, and I tend to think they are more of a Glasto band than a Download or Sonisphere band - I'd love it if they played.

Thoughts?

I saw them on the Main Stage in 1995 (it wasn't a Pyramid that year) and was none too impressed. They'd gone from being a blistering rock'n'roll band to a doped-up jam band by that point and they meandered way too much, not helped by a slew of covers and (at that point) unreleased tracks like Evil Eye.

I saw them twice that summer (supporting the Stones at Wembley) and both times they bored me, which was a real pity as their show at the Glasgow Barrowlands during the High As The Moon tour remains one of my all time favourites.

They did play before in 1995 I think - they were so good - it's the only time I've ever got lost - thought i was heading for Pennards and found myself at Joe Bananas by the Acoustic Tent. I dunno if they'd go back if Kate Hudson's knocking around this year.

Well - there were three Wembley gigs and I was only at the first one, where they just jammed, really and maybe only did a couple of tracks (Thorn in My Pride, perhaps?) My abiding memory is that Chris Robinson had a percussion rack set up in front of him and went through it bit by bit, clicking castanets and tapping woodblocks rather than singing or performing...

I'd love to see them at Glastonbury, but it doesn't fit with the announced dates, unless they want to hang out in Europe for a week between shows. The tour dates are as follows, and tickets apparently are a touch over £30 which is not bad. Going to do both London and hopefully Amsterdam too.

07/07/2011 Vigevano, ITL (Milan) (electric set)

07/09/2011 Bilbao, SPA (electric set)

07/11/2011 Manchester, ENG (electric set)

07/12/2011 London, ENG (acoustic & electric sets)

07/13/2011 London, ENG (acoustic & electric sets)

07/15/2011 Lichtenvoorde, NL (electric set)

07/17/2011 Amsterdam, NL (acoustic & electric sets)

07/18/2011 Amsterdam, NL (acoustic & electric sets)

goodness me, 20 years of the Black crowes? I feel old!!

I absolutely love the first two albums, then kinda went off them a bit. never managed to see them live, I'd be one happy bunny if they played glasto. A very happy bunny indeed!

I think it's safe to assume we were at different gigs - I think the one I went to may well have been on a Saturday - because they played a really good set, lots of good tunes and pranced about bare-foot on their carpets like a proper junior Stones when I was there.

    • Can't speak for Dua Lipa's, but Coldplay's was vastly scaled down compared to their stadium production staging though, and tracks were adapted to reflect that. MOTS tour had a full walkway 30m out to the B-Stage in the middle of the crowd, and two C-Stages. Glastonbury didn't accommodate that at all and just had a very small walkway in front of the Pyramid stage, and (IIRC) a disconnected B-Stage.   Which re-enforces my point. Acts can adapt their stage shows if they really want. Most do, some don't want to. Glastonbury might miss out on the odd act that doesn't want to slightly adapt, but so will most festivals.
    • Oh wow, was sure they’d be playing this or trees.
    • A name I didn’t think of. Maybe too big though. Think he’d go down very well despite being quite controversial.
    • Oh bummer, got excited then 😂   Although if I had read all the way down it would have been a bit of a give away, no other festival will book both of those 😂
