Kendal Calling 2011

just remember so much smoke you couldnt see the band, loads of lights flashing (which were pretty lost in the friday morning sun), i went on the strength of trash and a couple of other tracks however it was hard to get in to the atmosphere of the music at 11am. im sure they would have a much more appropriate time slot and stage if they appeared at kendal

i remember being hungover and hacked off, we'd all gone to bed at 4am and woke up at 6am to find that one of the lads had been robbed of all his cash and his magic cigarette collection, there had been 10 tents done around us and theyd got away with around £1800 and numerous ahem, other items ! we'd been to report it at the police station which felt like an hour walk and plonked ourselves in front of the stage.

i would have prefered a growler !

just looking for a bit of advice for anyone whos been to kendal calling before,

i tried buying tickets at 3 yesterday afternoon on release day, specifically for the emporers field because my wife is registered disabled and parking the car next to the tent seems a great advantage. Ive been to festivals before and know how bad the slog can be. Ive also got a 10 year old and the emporers field was the family option. However by 3 yesterday the tickets are no longer available for that field.

just wondering if anyone could tell me if the other fields are far from the car parks, if so id have to do endless trips to and from the car carrying the camping and cooking gear myself. Also wondering how noisy the other fields are, as i know in previous years a lot of people have complained about drunken youths running riot.

last piece of advice is, does anyone know of any other festivals where it is possible to park next to the tent, of a similar size and family orientated.

cheers

I camped in Emporer Field last year. Its probably as far from the Emporer Field to the Arena entrance as it is from the car parks to other camping areas, so its not that far at all.

With regards to other festivals of a similar size that allow camping next to the car....try Solfest. You can camp next to your car at no extra cost and last year was headlined by James!

Hope this helps!

The Facebook page today had a posting saying Blondie had confirmed as a headliner on her own website. Anyone know anything more about this? This isn't what I was hoping for but I guess its a pretty big name, hoping for some more Calvin Harris/Doves-type acts announced next though!

Yeah it sounds like it was listed as an event on Blondie's website then taken down again presumably because Kendal Calling have not officially announced it yet. I personally think it'll be a great announcement, definitely keeps the festival that bit more diverse.

Blondie? - Hum, interesting - and, I'd think, a possibility - seeing as they're definitely doing the festivals around that time ... Not what we were expecting, but would definitely check it out ... Actually, we're really looking forward to the festival, regardless of who they announce - we're never been to The Lake District before - hee hee :D Roll on July! ;)

I read on facebook that she's headlining the Sunday which will be an amazing way to close the festival, especially compared to last years Sunday headliner. Really hope this is true! Never thought of myself as a Blondie fan but the more I think of it the more excited I am!

PastCaring - never been to the Lakes before?! Incredible. Kendal's a great way to pop that cherry but make sure you spend a few days exploring before hand!

Wow! Did not see that one coming at all!!! Pretty decent headliner...not a huge fan but saw them before the Strokes at IOW last year and they were pretty entertaining.

You know who'd be great...really, really great...but would probably never happen...The Pixies! Maaaaan, that would be awesome, probably cost about the same as Blondie as they tend to fill the 'sub-headliner' slot at bigger festivals...

Pixies would be fantastic. Seen them a few times over the years, and they would fill the Saturday night slot perfectly. Blondie are a good call tho, saw them last year in Sheffield and they can still bang em out, if the younger (ie sub 60 y.o.) guitarist remembers to keep his solos short.

I've noticed on Twitter that Kendal Calling are following bands who are appearing, and some who appeared last year, but also a few others, including Hot Chip, The Cribs and Bombay Bicycle Club ? Hot Chip, altho not quite in my indie/punky ditch, would fit for the Friday night slot, and Johnny Marr finishing saturday night off, well that would be cool.

Other than what we know, I would run around squawking if The Mighty Fall, Wedding Present, and Half Man Half Biscuit made it a proper C86 1980’s indie weekend. The Fall could headline the Calling Out stage. I know its for new bands, but Smiffy could have sacked his band and brought a new team in before Kendal.

We're doing Glastonbury and KC this year - rather bizarrely I'm getting more excited about KC and that line up. I think it's to do with it being more manageable and half an hour from home, it feels more accessible somehow :). Blondie to headline Sunday is right up my street, cracking singalong to end the weekend. I'm easily pleased.

Blondie?? Yey. :DB)

Would explode if The Pixies were to appear!!

Hot Chip would be pretty good, excellent festival band B)

Would like to see The Wedding Present & The Fall added, they're on the festival circuit this year.... here's hoping.....

And Dreadzone please..

Would also be nice to get some reggae added ?!?!?

in the past the festival seems to have had a decent mix on, not in to dance myself but i can tolerate some of the bands, sure i'll find plenty of other stuff around to listen to. Happy with Blondie, got a few of her cds in the collection and ive never seen her live before. Gotta say if it did turn out to be the cribs and bombay bicycle club id be happy enough with them as well.

After The Doves played last year i had a secret hope that elbow would play but with them doing arena gigs now theyve maybes overtaken what the festival can offer in payment. Agree with the people on the facebook page that the courteeners seem taylor made to headline

Dunno about Elbow being too big tbh...still tickets available for most of their arena dates...they would be awesome. How about Cribs Friday (not really dancey though!), Elbow Saturday, Blondie Sunday??

Given the number of stages though, aint that fussed about the main stage, caught some brilliant bands on the Calling Out last year that I'd never have seen otherwise, Wind-Up Birds, Underdogs, Our Fold, General Fiasco (plus Exit Calm and Godlheart Assembly). Half hoping the main stage is crap so I get my arse in there again
