Flaming Lips v U2

The Flaming Lips in 2003 was one of my favourite Glastonbury performances ever - just brilliant.

I can't stand Bono, and haven't listened to anything by U2 for years.

And yet...looks like U2 might be a bit special, and their back catalogue is pretty good.

I also wonder how the FLips can top their last appearance.

Anyone seen either band recently?

Can someone please tell me U2 are sh*te live and just play their new stuff?!

I'm facing the same predicament. The Flaming Lips have done me well and I'm a bit over U2... but I have a feeling people will talk about this as one of the all-time great Glasto performances. I think I'll see what friends are doing what and decide based on that.

My heart says "Lips dude ... Lips"

But my head says "Yup ... Heart's right ... go see them Lips"

... still, there's a niggling doubt somewhere deep down that U2 could pull someting out of the bag.

Ah sod it, U2'll be on the telly when I get home. Lips all the way for me!.... :P:P:P

i'm the same as everybody else really

keep thinking 'U2 never do festivals anymore so surely they're gonna pull something spectacular out of the bag, and when wil i ever get to see them again?'

but everything since the early 90s has been terrible, especially ther last two albums, and i really couldn't sit through all of that just to hear the few pre-Achtung Baby tracks they play these days

plus Bono is an arsehole

i'm not even a massive fan of Flaming Lips (though i'm hoping that'll change in the next two months) but their live shows are the stuff of legends, and i'm sure they'd do something absolutely breathtaking considering they're headlining Glasto

hell, even if they just do their normal show, you've got tons of confetti, people in animal suits, the singer coming into the crowd in a massive see through ball... incredible

i shall be at the Flaming Lips and will probably be in tears by the end of it

worst clash of the weekend for me for all the reasons people have said. the lips have a piece of my heart, they are the ultimate feel-good band BUT i've seen them before. u2 i never have and never will and it might be special. i'm thinking i'll start with u2, see how the vibe is and if bono preaches once i'm legging it over to the lips to watch the tail end of their set.

i never recommend doing half and halfs at headline o' clock cos you miss everything but it's the only way i can comfort myself.

bloody nice dilemma to have though. :P

The setlist will include virtually all of these songs for certain:

In The Morning Of The Magicians

Convinced Of The Hex

Evil

See The Leaves

Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt. 1

Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung

Waitin For Superman

The W.A.N.D.

She Don't Use Jelly

Do You Realize??

I really don't see the predicament, one is an amazing live band who realise that you have to become slightly Spinal Tap to connect with an audience at enormo gigs and who also constantly push themselves and their music, the other is U2

I'm still a bit torn - I love a fair bit of U2's back catalogue and if they choose the right set it could be incredible. I don't hate their recent albums as much as some people above seem to - but clearly they don't represent a band at their peak. I've never seen them before, am not a big fan of stadium gigs so was definitely going to see them.

But...I really like The Flaming Lips and they were amazing 7 years ago. I've not really listened to Embryonic yet though and At War With the Mystics wasn't their best, despite a few amazing songs. I can see myself getting into Embryonic and swaying towards the Lips but I really want to see U2 at least once and surely a pyramid headline slot is going to be better than a soulless and overpriced stadium gig.

    • Another new one from Overmono.   Album is shaping up nicely.
    • I'm only judging by highlights but considering that I saw a lot of anxieties from US fans about them getting it wrong after several bad results in the last year or so, they very much had it on opening night. Might be as much about Paraguay being a long way from the team that beat Brazil and Argentina in qualifying though.   Canada also doing something in a World Cup other than lose and arguably be good enough to have beaten Bosnia means reasonable start. Think they might regret not winning though.

    • I mean Two Door Cinema Club from that era have sold out Crystal Palace Bowl and played the O2 before. So there are indeed precedents.   I guess it depends how far the 2000s/2010s indie hierarchy we go before we truly find one that ends up getting blue dot fever.
