satriani is great. the person you are describing is ynwgie malmstein. complete sausage of a musician. no melody or tune, just try to get as many notes into the bar as you can.

Actually, you may be spot on there. I think I meant Malmsteen. A mate of mine is a guitarist and loves Satriani, Vai, Malmsteen etc. I just find them a bit 'meh' TBH. Their like are known as willy waving axe men.

And that chap from Dragonforce. Incredible talent, but not used in the right way IMHO. (It was them who did Through The Fire and Flames, wasn't it?)

David Gilmour is the main miss for me here, surprised noone's mentioned him.

I'd vote Neil Young/David Gilmour all the way, but I see the point about no 60s/70s guitarists.

Mike McCready/Johnny Marr wins for me, out of this lot. Although, looking at the nominees, it seems the only criteria for being nominated for this vote is that you look cool with a guitar, as opposed to actually knowing how to play the damn thing.

As David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana etc etc are not in this particular race I too go for Tom Morello's unorthodox guitarwork. :P

I'm probably going to get absolutely slated for this, but I voted for Matt Bellamy. Not necessarily the best on a guitar, but hell, he can write a good riff or two. And some of the weird noises he can get out of his guitar (admittedly, with pedals, knobs, and a Kaoss pad) are IMO pretty impressive.

From that list Johnny Marr or John Squire would be my choice.

Strange to see Simon Tong on there rather than Nick McCabe - what's that all about?

No Johnny Ramone?

No Tom Verlaine?

Not even Tommy Emmanuel or Andy McKee?

Most glaringly of all, no Peter Solowka!! :P

Some of the choices are very strange. Kurt Cobain and Bob Mould were/are great songwriters, but guitar playing-wise they're average at best.
