Camping stoves!

Any one else planning on bringing a wee camping stove?! And on that note, any exciting hot dishes that you swear by? I'm a bit fed up with the Pot Noodles.

However, made an horrendous error in 2007 with undercooked hot dogs which resulted in painful stomach cramps followed by a rather explosive visit to the backstage medical facilities!!

being a solo camper coming by public transport I need small and light, but must have some luxuries.

Literally just something for that early morning cuppa and something to heat water for washing (myself).

Its a recycled alcohol gel stove, cleaned out, painted with hammerite smooth, stuffed with cotton wool which is then soaked with meths.

Google "Nato +gel" or "greenheat +backpacker" for the stove. Pack some cotton wool (balls or strips) and about 500ml of meths (just about enough for 5 days, average of 3 boil ups per day for one person). You then just need a mug with a lid. My first one was a large 2 pint stainless steel mug with a lid form a pound shop.

Being a meths burner, about 7 minutes for a 2/3rds of a pint of water. but hey, no hurry, I'm on holiday!

Packs up very small.

I do pack smash and cuppa soups for emergencies.

A stainless steel dog bowl does me for a "sink" for my ablutions.

Other than the smash and soup take a disposable BBQ with you and some frozen food. once you'r set up and settled, a BBQ is a great way to say "I've arrived".

I have used one of these, which have turned out to be pretty good. Cheap as chips and four of those little tablets burn just enough to boil a camping kettle. They're a bit fiddly to light, long matches are a good idea, but yeah, for the price it's pretty cool. They're only slightly bigger than a baccy tin too, so easy to pack. You can get them in most camping shops.

I'm bringing this cooking stove:

It has two hobs and is lightweight and very portable.

I can cook a fantastic Italian dish (Pollo Limone e Tagliatelli) on it in about 10 minutes, which is one of the best meals I've ever eaten at Glastonbury.

I am tempted to cook this on the Thursday (will be too drunk after the footy on the Wednesday) but won't be able to cook enough for all of , it might have to be a first come first served approach.

I almost blew the me and the tents around us last year in the John Peel field last year.

I don't recomend the cheap flat bed stoves at all because tried to light it with no avail, so used a match and the whole thing went up in flames. I honestly thought it was going to blow and for 30 seconds which was probably the longest and most terrifying moments of my life. Out of the panic a moment of clarity and instinct arose and i kicked the connect switch off which stopped the gas supply and it went out.

Im not kidding the flames were about 6 ft high. I really didnt have enough space in hindsight and it was probably to close to the crammed in tents around but if there is a lesson to be learned for everybody make sure you have plenty of space to cook because i feel very very lucky that no one was hurt. I still get a shudder thinking about it now!

If your going to buy a stove do not go for the cheap flatbed stoves. I found them tempramental and awkward to use and obviously dangerous!

I eat these, they come in different flavours are are quite filling too! I know it says microwave on the front, but on the back it has instructions to heat it in a pan. Bingo!

I've got one of those Sunn Gas jobbies too! Never had any problems with it, is very light & works just a treat for those essential morning coffees & our now traditional arrival Pot Noodle!

i'm temped to buy one of those hexi burners and a load of hexi blocks. they should save a lot of space, those flat burners are quite big and heavy.

that should allow me to have a cuppa and a can of big breakfast in the morning

Me and my sis bought one of those flat ones a couple of years ago at glasto, it was fab! We took it last year and mainly used it for hot drinks in the mornings. It saved us a fortune on coffee! We'll def be taking it this year, even if all we use it for is tea/coffee/hot choc its a lifesaver.

I'm one of those 'can't function without coffee in the morning' people, and if you whack a splash of JD in it too, you're all set for the day ;-0
