Look, I'm a massive Glasto music fan, but at the end of the day, I will miss any band to watch England in the World Cup. There's no way ME will refuse to show the game somewhere, cuz even if 5% of people on site wanna watch it, if they left the site to watch it, it'd put the future of the festival into doubt with the chaos that would result.

Oh yeah, and just for arguments sake, if we won the group and the German's came 2nd... ME has to plan for something like this being a possibility.

yep, im one of em.

the fact is i see so many bands and go to so many festivals that it would have to be a 'once in a lifetime' chance to see a band (velvet underground 93 for example) for me to miss the football. festival season comes round every summer, bands play all year. the chance to see england in the world cup comes round every four year, if were lucky.

glastos not some holy ground any more, if it ever was, its a massive commercial activity which caters to its punters and ensures its survival. this year, that means ensuring next years liscense by not causing havoc to the local area, so showing the football.

heres an idea russy mate, if they show it on the pyramid, why dont you check out one of the 30+ other performance areas at that time?im sure you'll be able to find a great band that will have a cracking atmosphere (seeing as they would be hardcore fans) while you let us thuggish, racist, xenophobic football fans (its the way youve been lumping us all in with a miniscule minority of supporters) have our 'horrible' time.

Yes but we are not talking about cancelling a minor band at 2pm in the afternoon or something, people are calling for the 4th most prestigious slot at the festival be cancelled for this football game!

seeing as this is the 40th anniversary, there is a strong likelihood that this slot WILL provide a 'once in a lifetime' moment. It is crazy to want this to be cancelled for a football game (not you specifically, but people in this thread).

I dont care if the football is shown, but I do care if it impacts on any of the festival proper.

And you can throw as many little tantrums as you like, ME doesn't HAVE to show the football at all just to appease spoilt brats like you. If the football is so important to you, stay away and watch it. It's really that simple. The festival most certainly doesnt have to drastically alter it's plans just for the likes of you.

theres a lot of ifs and buts and presumtions in that statement.

for 1 thats assuming england top the group if your talking about posponing a saturday performance

i certainly dont consider the saturday pre-headline slot the 4th most prestigious slot, id say that the 3 other stage headliners (esspecially the sunday) are more worthy - but i do appreciate that it would be a big act.

no-one has paid to watch football, but unfortunately the worlds premier competition co-incides with a great festival, which relies on good relations with the local council and residents to get its license

think about it the other way mate, the football doesnt get shown and the disruption caused to the local area and extra policing costs means that the festy doesnt get its license next year. so do you really not want to sacrifce 2hours out of an estimated 360 hours of entertainment (12 hours a day x 30 stages) and risk not having an entire festival next year?

On the other hand, I also have to say that for me watching the football isn't sacrificing part of the festival, it's a part of the festival I look forward to, watching football with such a brilliant crowd, without some of the idiots I usually have to share my football with (because I don't deny they exist, they're just generally not at Glastonbury), and knowing that if we lose, my disappointment would last less than 5 minutes bacause i'm at Glastonbury! It's one of the best football experiances there is!

I think the demand for the game once the festival has started is being over estimated. I do think the number of people leaving the site could be problematic if it's not shown, but it doesn't need to be the Pyramid if it is shown. 60,000 turned up on Thursday in 2004 beause there was nothing else on. Many of that crowd were non-football fans who wandered down there with their mates, but if there'd been somewhere else to go, they would've gone somewhere else & met up with their football mad mates later.

Whilst what you say makes sense - I can't see them electing to have the game on the Pyramid - maybe the second half - remember the Brazil game year's ago with samba music playing in the background and no commentary? It was a terrific moment. That year they also showed the game in full somewhere else - cinema field i think.

the organisers have long enough to put something together - and have it shown elsewhere - with the end of the game coinciding with changeover of acts - but only show it if England are winning - i still remember how flat Glastonbury went last time England lost .

If only it was dark when they kicked off - imagine it projected onto the flags above the park? (Bestival had projections onto its flags this year and that worked well) That would be pretty special and there's loads of space for a big crowd up there - in fact it could be seen from all over the site then too.

the football has always drawn a big crowd - even in the cinema field when Foo Fighters were on the Pyramid. The alternative of all those fans descending on the Glastonbury town iteself is unthinkable in terms of the licence as Tugger said - and IOW learnt that lesson four year's ago - Giddings has said they will have a dedicated field for football - i see Glastonbury doing similar.

I quite like the idea of a football field bacause it could show all the different country's games, putting off the concerns about the anglo bias. Maybe where flagtopia is? It's nice up there but a bit "stone circle without stones" and hasn't taken off massively yet as an area lots of people would significantly miss. Yes it would need toilets and a bar, but I think that could be sorted.

If the England game was on, you could see the point where people were starting to take up a spot and you needed to think about making a move if you wanted to make sure you got in, or you could see it getting full and say "nah - I'm not treking all up there to get turned away and come all the way back down again!"

Keep the flags too - but those lovely Glastonbury versions of all the national flags of all the teams taking part - all the vibrant African and South American ones too! I'm seeing this now - I think we're on a roll!
