But I'm not technically gifted in such matters. I have seen Stevie Vai play a treble necked guitar, but I thought that was mainly fret-w*nkery.

I couldnt agree more, it's not someone I would listen to. I guess it's hard to define "best guitarist" when there is so many variables to compare. I guess Steve Vai is best at mindless shredding headf**k. Him trying to pull off a soulful BB King piece wouldnt be so good...

BB King deff still tours and has plenty of dates for this year.

Jimmy Paige has stated he plans to perform solo stuff this year

David Gilmour not sure about touring but certainly plays select live dates so is still around.

Chuck Berry has live dates announced for this year.

Steven Drozd deff still tours unless the Flaiming lips have spilt in the last five minutes.
