Caleb Slams Reading Crowd

Kings of Leon need to shrink their egos sopmewhat I think, they suddenly think they're the biggest band in the world, but the reality is that all the records they've sold in the past year or so are mainly from radio listeners who aren't that serious about their music, with only a small proportion from their loyal fans, I bought the first 3 albums pretty much when they came out, and I bought Only By The Night thinking it would be as good if not better than the first three, but it was a massive step in a different direction for the band, and this alienated most of their old fans, including myself. All the fans at Reading hoping for old stuff would have been annoyed at the large amount of new songs they played, as well as playing old songs at slower tempos which many people mentioned, and the Sex on Fire/Use Somebody fans are probably not experienced gig goers so didn't really get into it much, and this culminated in Caleb acting like a tw*t to the crowd, which was out of order, and would have put off a lot of fans, old and new.

Anyway, I'm almost glad the new album was shit, as it made me see Marmaduke Duke instead who were f**king awesome, great mix of old and new songs, got some great pics but I got pickpocketed on saturday and my camera happened to be in that pocket, oh well, still had a great festival.

I'm sure there was a story going around that they'd been paid $500k for that gig - dunno how that works out in pounds, but if I was paid that much to play my songs to tens of thousands of people, I'd be happier about it than that. The audience didn't owe them anything.

I didn't bother watching KOL (seen them before, and probably wouldn't have the chance to see FNM again), but I know this much - over the weekend I completely lost it to bands I barely knew and songs I'd never heard, because they got that reaction from me naturally simply by being awesome in that moment. Just expecting the crowd to enjoy it regardless doesn't really work.

.... for crap commercial indie bands who have no respect for their audience. Ask the big boys like Pearl Jam, Metallica, RATM, Pumpkins, Maiden, etc who has the best crowd and I guarantee you that not only will they say Reading, but they probably won't even remember that they had to play something called the 'Leeds Festival' to meet contractual obligations.

I've never understood the perennial Reading vs Leeds argument. I understand that people don't want to think they've made the wrong decision, hence why there is always an argument over which company makes the best video games consoles. What I can't understand is that we're all here, all 150,000 or so of us, because we're attending what is essentially the same festival. All that differs is the layout and the days in which the bands play. I'd like to see more inter-festival love! I have nothing but good feelings for my Reading-bound bretheren

Fair play to them for actually playing Leeds (we were told that they hadn't).

But still, what a f*cking c*nt. The crowd don't bumlick you quite as much as you thought they would, and rightly or wrongly were there to see the two songs that landed you that slot in the first place. So what do you do? You cry and scream that you're underappreciated, and tell the crowd that they're dickheads.

Just take your half a million quid, finish your 90 minutes work, show a bit of appreciation and shut the f**k up.

    • RIP Roy Hattersley
    • Proper special gig tonight. They won't mean much to most people, but The Dogs D'Amour were one of the most significant bands of my youth.   Tyla, yer main man of said band, was playing in Birkenhead tonight. Not many there, but it was going fine. Then he decided he didn't like the smoke and the flashing lights so suggested moving the gig to the beer garden. Off we all went, and it was magical. Like having your favourite musician play in your garden. I absolutely loved it.   Before:     After:
