opinion retention

Right. I have been feeling the following since getting back from the festival - and up until now have been able to retain these feelings / opinions. However it has become too much to bare, and now I feel I have to share.

I have been a member of these forums for over 6 years. In my time I have seen many boarders come and go (some through choice and some through force), but at present there are a some individuals that are so far up their own arse it is unbelieveable. These people think that because they have been here longer / been to more Glastonburys / added more posts to the forums, that they feel their 'opinion' is more inmportant than other members.

Well I am here to stand up for the newbies. Old-timers - your opinion is NOT more valid, your opinion is NOT more resepcted, your opinion is NOT more valued.

It is time for you to realise that you are getting past it, and that it is NOT your festival. The 'new kids' have come along with their ideas, and are changing it into the festival they want. The fact that it is no longer the festival you grew up with, and the fact that it is not the way you would go about things does not give you the God given right to winge about it - regardless of whether you have been doing it for 14 years or not!!

Glastonbury festival is a festival for the people, and of the people, and it is a festival that is driven by what people want. Therefore if it is not run in the way you see fit, I would take this as a sign that you are no longer of the majority, and you should learn to let go. Either accept the changes - or piss off and find a new festival.

I know I will get a lot of abuse for this, but I am sick and tired of certain individuals on this site looking down their nose at others (even though they protest they do not), just because it may only be there 1st/2nd/3rd or whatever year.

To all those that say: 'I hate flags' / 'I hate chairs' / 'you weren't there man' - go f**k yourselves and leave us that love the festival to enjoy it.

People will always whinge. Whether it is about chairs/flags/change/other people whinging , etc.

Does it really do any harm to have a little whine now and again?

I do however agree with your point that there are some posters who give the impression that the festival belongs to them and they are continually hankering after the 'good old days'. It may well have been better in the good old days but I suspect that rose-tinted glasses are at play and all that. But again, let them reminisce and yes, whinge. It doesn't really make any difference does it?

Well said LRW, its about time somebody stood up and said something about certain individuals acting as if they own the forum/ festival. it doesnt matter if its your 1st or 14th festival, we all go for the same reasons. if you dont feel that the festival isnt good enough anymore or caters for your needs, go to another festival, there are loads of festivals over the uk europe and the world every year and are as varied and as diverse as you like.

This forum is for people to chat, share ideas and festival moments, its about time we stopped hearing the same old shit from the same people about years gone by, this isnt woodstock or the 60s, get over it, times change, music changes and people change and yes you get older. If Glasto stayed the same it would get abused, people bored and will die out.

Get on board or sail off to another festival and let the newbies, the virgins and the 1 or 2 timers have their day cos you were that person once.

I think the main point that everyone is forgetting:

Glastonbury is still the best festival in the world.

Even if it is shit compared to what it used to be, even if it is too commercial, even if the food is too expensive, even if you had a bad experience this year, even if you don't like the lineup, even if there are too many flags etc etc etc....

It is still a trillion times better than other major festival. It's a scientific fact as far as I am concerned.

Remember the age-old saying: Carlsberg don't make festivals. But if they did, Glastonbury would still be f*cking better.

This years Glastonbury was my first and I did ask several questions on this forum, all of which I recieved decent answers without any sarcasm or cockiness and found very helpful.

That said I have read posts by people, mainly newbies, asking what would seem to that person a reasonable question and just getting a load of people taking the piss or being sarcastic.

It also annoys me when people have a moan about flags/chairs/fencing of tent areas (within reason) since this festival is to be enjoyed by all who go in whatever way works for that person, and just because that behaviour annoys some people i think it just needs to be accepted (within reason) - afterall in a festival of that size surely there are going to be at least one or two people that rub you up the wrong way. I am sure that those people complaining did at least one thing that annoyed another festival attendee during the 5 days there also.

It is almost seems like festival snobbery and as if some people think there is some sort of hierarchy in place.

Basically people on this forum are in the most very helpful, but i certainly get your point in a big way!

Would also be interested to know who LRW is referring to.....but i suppose that would jus be a bit mean!!

Also how have you changed it? I always assumed it was the eavis' and the mean old fiddler that changed most of it? And to be honest, it ain't that different to how it was, so really, what the tinky winky are you talking about!

I'm old, flags rule, chairs rule, letting people have the freedom to do what the flip they like all weekend are all cool and were not invented by you I'm afraid!

And finally, if you want to post a post about how bad it is when people look down their noses at others.. it would probably help your point a little if you don't actually do that to the readers of your post!

I'm old - so that (in your opinion) makes me past it - thank thats made me feel great ! It was my first time at G - so not sure which side of the fence you'd departmentalise me into !

The festival is for everyone - young, and old .... people are entitled to an opinion and are allowed to comment when things change (which they will do)... no-one should be excluded from G - thats whats it's all about. G does have a different atmosphere to most festivals, and I agree that G should try to keep the vibe it has always has.... not easy but a challenge for each and every one of us

And the first thing is to accept every man, women and child as they are. No judgements ! Yes some things will annoy all of us, young and old, but live with them adn we'll all live peacefully together for 52 weeks a year (not just 5 days)

See you all next year - another year older- all of us :-)

the other day someone was moaning to me about

"how the festival's changed" (it's his third glastonbury...if by 'change' he means 'less mud than 07' i don't really see what the problem is),

"the younger crowd are ruining it" (it's twattish people who throw piss who ruin it),

"kate moss is making it trendy" (WTF? mossy has been going for god knows how long and wasn't even there this year!)

people who have gone to more glastonburys than this guy (me? 6...therefore no way near a vet) surely are within their right to offer their opinion as more valid/knowledgeable.

LRW - I guess it comes about because some people care passionately about the festival. But a lot of what you say is true. However, there are some things about Glasto which differentiate it from other large festivals, and if those things - be it spirit, approach, caring a bit more for one another, friendliness or whatever you want to call it - are in danger of being diluted by people who are new to the festival or don't hold hold those values as being important, then of course it's only natural that those people who value those attributes are going to react. It's how they react that's important, whether that be a friendly tap on the shoulder and ask someone to pick up their rubbish or if they launch diatribe on the internet. I think one is going to be more successful than the other.

I think that by mentioning the flags /chairs issue, it distracts from your original argument that the "old timers" arent friendly, an argument that I cant agree with.

I have always thought these forums are very friendly, theres an odd troll now and then, theres a couple of grumpy gits, and a couple of wind-up merchants but other than that I would describe these forums as "mostly happy"

....also they are a hundred times better then the other forums
