Should Daft Punk Headline the Pyramid Next Year

As much as I would love to see daft punk anywhere at glasto, it will not happen!

At a festivals Q&A session a few months back - I asked there agent about them playing Glastonbury - he said they won't play as Glastonbury makes bands sign up to permission of TV coverage and daft punk won't have themselves being recorded (officially) at gigs!

but that's not factually correct; bands are not "made" to sign up to appearing on TV, they're offered the opportunity for them to appear on TV if they want to. Lots of acts have refused - Leonard Cohen last year for example.

whether they are Pyramid headling material, i don't know, but in the world of dance music, they are about as big and influential as it gets. making a name for themselves, as you put it, has already happened. they couldn't be more mainstream. Orbital, Chems, even the Prodigy at their peak are the only other outfits capable of pulling the crowds like they do.

Well, this just goes to show i know (and care) very little about the dance genre.

If they are as mainstream as you say they are i'm surprised i haven't heard of them though...but then again i don't consider the whole concept of 'house music' to be mainstream anyway.

I certainly wouldn't be comfortable with having them as a Pyramid headliner, no matter how much light pollution they'd shoot from the stage.

In the context of the 40th year celebrations it makes sense that ME & EE will be going for the U2s, Rolling Stones, Radioheads and Coldplays of this world.............and so maybe in this light DP may be looked upon as not big enough (However IMO they would put on a better show them most of them!!)

However, anyone claiming DP are not big enough to headline the Pyramid outright IMO are blind to the fact that not every Pyramid Headliner will be or has been a big time superstar!!

As previously stated Ash, Sunk Anansie, Basement Jaxx, Arctic Monkeys, Killers, Stereo (f**king) Phonics and poxy Travis all headlined the Pyramid!

In this context DP would be rightfully there!!

I last saw them at coachella 2006! They headlined the dance tent there! Was an awsome show! Even at coachella though they didn't make the main stage

I think everyone has heard a daftpunk song at some point! Aerodynamic is played by pretty much every DJ these days

If Kings of Leon could headline before they got huge with Sex on Fire etc then Daft Punk could do it... although Other Stage on Sunday would also be great.

Kings of Leon's last album before headlining was no.1 and that was released a year before they headlined, Daft Punk's last album was no.10 and 5 years before next year.

Kings of Leon had played Glastonbury before including 2nd on the pyramid so it was a natural progression/step-up, Daft Punk have never played Glastonbury.

Plus the Eavises freely admitted that they had trouble finding headliners for 2008. With next year being the 40th anniversary, I don't expect them to have similar troubles.

I can see why you would make the comparision, but the two situations are pretty different.

When they played the dance tent in the end of the 90's at glasto they were just dull ! it was at the height of the interest of them at that time and their set just went nowhere.

Around '95, my mates and I were heavily into Orbital and Higher Intelligence Agency. OK, we knew HIA weren't a major act - but I'm sure we believed Orbital were much bigger than they actually were.

At that time, Oasis were big. But I had no idea just how big. I was astonished when Oasis did Glasto just how many people were excited to see them.

This explains how some people think Kings of Leon weren't big enough, while thinking that Daft Punk are plenty big enough. They're seeing it from a skewed perspective.

All those bands would have had a chart-topping (or near enough) album on the year of headlining or the year before. Daft Punk haven't and I can't see any plans for them to have one out before summer next year.

Look; while I like the idea of Shangcadiacity and applaud the inclusion of late night lunacy they should just have or also have a proper late night stage or two capable of handling several thousand with good sound. It would be perfect for the likes of DP, Orbital et al. This way you can lessen the crush, get a proper light show from artists who, in some years, may be out ranked for headline status and get everyone dancing in the old skool dusk till dawn fashion. As it stands they are simply too busy and many end up missing out. You could give everyone an hour or two to chill out. Imagine those areas all wired up to just one or two sound systems instead of two dozen with the whole lot going off and you get what I'm on about.

hey man, if you can pull some strings with the authorities to let us have a proper all night rave stage, instead of them all shutting down at 12.30, i'm right behind you!

as it is, i think Shangri-La et al, with lots of smaller, quieter venues is all we're going to get away with for the time being, and even they didn't happen until very recently.

i think night time stuff is getting better every year: give me Shangri-La, Trash City and Arcadia over a dodgy PA at Joe Bananas any day, but an all night proper stage would be mega!
