Chairs

So... I kept this title short as I imagine this will bring people in droves judging my other threads...

Can someone help me here... I don't understand the issue?

I have been going to Glasto since the 90s and I have never had an issue with chairs being there... perhaps right at the front in a mosh pit might be annoying but ban chairs altogether? This seems very discriminatory to me.. have you considered those with mobility issues that pay equal amounts to attend Glasto and may not be able to stand for long periods of time, like my good friend that I went with this year and who attends every year for example.. he suffers from back and feet problems making standing or sitting on the floor very hard and would be in severe pain if he stood for a 2 hour set without the ability to rest now and then on his wee camping stool...

I'm not trying to start a row with this thread, but I'd really like to know just what it is that is so bad about them? I would prefer to be able to party with people of all mobility than just people dancing their hearts out whilst others can't come to the main stages because they aren't allowed to sit down?

I think the issue is where chairs are too close to the front of the stage (ie near the mosh pit), or set up (and getting in the way) with no one sitting in them, or in really long lines with no easy gap through them.

I dont have a problem with people who sit on their chair's within reason of positioning.

But when people are carrying these bloody things about they should do it with more care i got belted across both F**kin knee caps several times by people with two iron bars hung to their shoulders completely oblivious to what they have just done.

My blood boiled when i saw i kid take one in the face. poor thing the young un was heart broken.

I think they're fine at the back of stages (near the Pyramid tree for example) but I did notice a lot more nearer the stages this year. It's probably why it seemed to busy even further back at the stages.

Nowt wrong with chairs, flags, security, weather, lineup. I think the complainers (you know who you are) on this board are just all old and grumpy and have nothing better to do. Maybe next year Mr Evais can have a 90's camp site and a 90's stage and we can put them into a small corner of the site on their own and let the rest of us have a good time without be tutted at or having fingers wagged at us.

there was someone witha tarpaulin down not letting anyone else stand on it incase it got muddy, and it was no small tarpaulin either - there were only 4 or 5 of them there and could easily have had 10/15 ppl in that space - thats what gets on my nerves, yeah space is good but no need to be such an arse having a go at ppl about it.

At one point my foot was on the tarpaulin by about an inch, they came and had a go at me for it GRRRRRRRRR

I have one of them, I only took it out one day to the pyramid stage and stayed a long way back.

Spending all day on the floor or on my feet would take some of the enjoyment out of the place, but at the same time people with chairs at the front of the crowds are a bit of a pain, epsecially in the dark.

Maybe a dedicated seating area would be an idea...

Its less that people are using chairs, flags etc, it is just some are being very thoughtless/effing braindead as to where they put them down and open them up.

Look, If you camp on a roundabout on a busy road, do not be suprised if there is traffic going past, just as if you set up chairs etc between the sound stage and the stage itself, don't get the hump if you find people dancing round you and you accidently get clocked by a stray elbow or stumbled over as the crowd shifts.

Or if you rais a flag up, and it keeps drooping over the people behind you, don't be supprised to get a tap on the should and be told "hold that straigh or put it away", certainly never reply with "wot you gonna effing do about it".

There were a group of us that sat on chairs at the pyramid this year.

We were 80% of the way back up the field. Spent most our time up and dancing, but were good for sitting down between artists etc.

Dont think we ever got in the way - at least we weren't told we were!

I think they have their place though. I would NEVER take them anywhere near the front or to a smaller stage / tent!

Like a few people have said, chairs are cool, but at least halfway back and beyond is common sense. Anything closer, especially at The Pyramid is just stupid and a little dangerous frankly. I took a chair; it never left the campsite! But the idea's sound, especially if someone's not too good on their feet.

All it takes is some kindness and consideration from the chair people. The tarpaulin people need to realise people are gonna walk on their precious plastic craptastic and the bat people...well what can I say about them?!?! Seriously though, how feckin' hard is it to show a little respect to one's fellow camper? I got a shitload of good vibes all weekend by just being aware of those around me. I'm plus of 6 feet tall; and if there's a 5' 2'' girl behind me, I'll always offer to let her go in front of me. She has a better time and I get a better view - everyone's a winner! Anyway, I've just scooted right off the point, so I'll shut up for now. :angry:

How about solving with a simple line in the Fine Guide saying "Though we welcome chairs, please be considerate about their use and in particular avoid using them too close to busy stages".

Then again, when has asking anyone who isn't considerate to be so ever worked?! :angry:

Like others, I don't like the idea of imposing "rules" everywhere, it's just going to get complicated, so let's at least start with a bit of encouragement for being nice about chairs, flags, tape barriers and gazebos. And if it is ignored, maybe it's time to find another festival as the people going to this one will not be the kind of people I'd like to spend the weekend with..

What I said here.....

Fair enough chairs at the back, but they get in the way down the front. A crowd surge pushed me from behind and I thumped into 2 chairs nearly knocking them and the people in them over. They had a go at me FFS! If I had fallen on them, myself and them could easily have been crushed from the crowd behind. If they were standing up they would have flowed with the crowd, that is why the should be BANNED at the front from about 7pm onwards at the big stages and all the time at mainstage. Keep them to the back
