Lockup 2009

Okay, we've had a few people (self included) bemoaning the lack of heavy bands at the top of the bill. So lets get ourselves back in the mood for the festival by asking the only question that REALLY matters.

Who do we reckon is playing the lockup?

I'm 99.99999% NOFX will headline one of the days. I don't claim to have inside knowledge, they just always play when they've got an album out. And based on the current guesses for Sunday's lineup (Radiohead/Beck/???? or Arctic Monkeys/Lostprophets/Offspring seem to be recurring guesses) I don't see them being main stage.

I'm also very confident Bouncing Souls will be at R/L, they play it regularly, didn't play it last year and are doing a world tour this year. Obviously they're only a late afternoon band though.

Not sure on who the other headliner would be. AFI are likely to be at the festival but are way too big. Any ideas?

Thursday - New album and not played since 2006. Think they'll be second top again but good shout for headliner I guess.

Reel Big Fish - New album and not played since headlining in 2006. I think they'll be low mainstage personally.

Rise Against - All but self confirmed. Would play top 2 now I reckon but I think we'll see them low mainstage Sunday.

A Day To Remember - Becoming bigger at a fast rate, reckon we'll see them put I'd put money on low Mainstage Sunday / high FR stage.

Alexisonfire - New album, did mainstage last year.

Atreyu - Not played in a long time, played alot on his show.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Used to play quite often but not been at Reading for a while now, new album since they last played etc.

Some others who I can't be asked to write a caption for who I think are likely - Finch, Protest The Hero and Rival Schools.

But er, tons more bands I'd like to see, we normally end up with random punk type bands I've no real care for. I'll remain hopefully, I liked plenty of bands on this stage last year .

Mad Caddies are probably a good shout to play as well, they're brilliant live.

Rise Against I had down as low mainstage, especially if they're already confirmed. They don't tend to could headline though and as you say they're certs to play.

Of your list I'd say alexisonfire are most likely to headline. Reel Big Fish too, although I reckon they'll be mainstage because last time they headlined.

I think Rancid will be headlining one day (hopefully Radiohead's day) as they have a new album coming out, they are going on a tour with Rise Against supporting which finished a few weeks before Reading and Leeds and they have said they will be touring for the whole year and when i saw them in Manchester last November they said they would be back in the UK sometime later next year.

I also think Gaslight Anthem and King Blues will defintely play as they are always on Mike Davies show.

All I can say is that if those are the 3 headliners the lock-up better be f*cking spectaular[. Reading's looking dreadfull this year, only way it could save some grace in my eyes would be to get any of the following headlining the 2nd/lock-up stage: Black Stone Cherry, Airbourne, Alter Bridge, Machine Head, NOFX, Rancid, RBF, JEW.

I'm truely dissappointed in the rumours/confirmed headliners so far as it seems like a big middle finger with the words "f*ck off to Download you metaller c*nts" tatooed on it, and if so many of my mates weren't planning on going Id seriously be considering Sonisphere

(By the way I'm not a "metaller" but I would appreciate some diversity in the headliners as they are clearly bands more popular in indie circles)

Incidently can anyone tell me why The Arctic Monkeys deserve to headline?!

Didnt somebody say Rise against are the ones touted to be doing the main stage / Headline lock up double

I hope we see Streetlight Manifesto somewhere on here. I say it every year but they are slowly getting bigger

Hold Steady headlining a day would be immense but I think they would be more suited for NME

Random Hand will no doubt get another apperance

But there are so many better/more deserving bands out there *grumble*

They're just generic indie pap pandering to the masses with cheap hook pop songs about dancefloors and prostituted blah blah blah NME blah blah blah integrity blah blah blah shite

There I think I've covered everything there :)

I would rather they headline than some irrelevant, past it grandad's like Iron Maiden.

Dave's right, for all the sellout digs, the Arctic Monkeys didn't actually release anything in 2008, so wouldn't have been able to win any awards.

ANYWAY

Can we get back to talking about the lockup, rather than a battle of the bands between an "indie schmindie band" and a bunch of pensioners?

Rancid are a good shout, easily big enough. Didn't they do it in 2007 though?

Rancid with Rise Against underneath would be good. Would also like to see streetlight manifesto, sonic boom 6, the jb conspiracy and a return from the king blues and random hand. Also the bronx, glassjaw, skindred and imperial leisure would be good to see.

NOFX are easily big enough for mid main stage, my reasoning is I don't see them agreeing to do a day headlined by any of this year's headliners.

Could be wrong though.

EDIT: I remember Sonisphere's organisers said "the music will be more diverse than just Metal, but it won't be indie schmindie". If they're still hacked off about last year, maybe they'll end up playing there instead?

    • If you didn't see melt banana at Apolo. Go see them at the festival. Insane.
    • Interesting, and thanks for coming back to give an update! I've seen that the second stage looks bigger than usual too, looks to be a Serious Stages - Stellar Stage from distance photos.    Seems like sizing wise stages have been scaled up somewhat this year.
    • I see its cancelled now but they did leave it really late to announce plus they are up against Kelburn Garden Party Festival not to far from the festival site.
