I watched Batman Begins on Bluray last night. The (obvious) level of detail is awesome.

How long is it going to take for everything we watch to be like this? When is High Definition going to be come the Standard Definition?

I watched two films yesterday - one of them I've seen loads of times and one was new.

The Core - fantastic film, well worked though I generally wish I could strangle Hilary Sw*nk in it...

Gossip - good film - shite ending - James Marsden :(

Bugger. I was going to jump in there with an offer too. I've got about 150 Doctor Who originals on VHS and my old recorder sounds like it's going to explode sometime soon.

Either that or people are getting hacked off with forking out top dollar for the next big thing, only for it to not be the next big thing or for it to be the next big thing at a quarter of the price they paid for it. They wising up.

And the film is the film. I think I'm getting to that point in my life where the facade of some nice effects doesn't really have the same impact on my when I was younger. Take that Batman film. It was alright, but after you strip away the effects and the ott of the Joker performance, it's just another superhero film. So what. I've seen hundreds of them in my life. I need something with a bit more meat on it these days, something to get me thinking. And thinking doesn't need blu-ray high definition on a huge television, which'll probably pack up two days after the warranty expires.

HDDVD, otherwise known as the format that lost :( has, I think, a few major advantages over Bluray right now.

1/ You can pick up one of the Drives for about £35.

2/ They are backwards compatible so, even if you dont want to buy the newer discs ( although they are also cheap where sold ) it will upscale all your old discs.

I think that makes a lot of sense for a short term solution. Hang back 2-3 years and see if BluRay kicks off.

Thanks to my night shift I had 6 hours of horror movies last night: Cabin Fever - Rubbish, Dead Silence - silly rubbish which at least made it enjoyable, Black Christmas - the remake which isn't as good as the original but kind of ok, and (the original) Halloween - my favourite horror ever :(

Watched 007 And The Phantom Of Wallace last night. I enjoyed it.

As for the Blu-Ray argument. Some films look better and are a spectacle on Blu-Ray. Some do look stunning and are visually incredible - particularly noir films or anything with grain effects - and the contrast is exceptional, blacks are black and colours are far more vibrant. But DVD's are just fine if you have them. I don't think replacing the Lord Of The Rings Extended Trilogy is high on my to-do list at all - the DVD's still look great. I do think Blu-Ray, provided they are displayed properly (the amount of times I've heard people judge Blu-Ray from a poorly set up TV that can't even display it properly astounds me) add an extra dimension, a fuller picture, it's more cinematic and defined, that's the point. Some films are fine on DVD, some are great to have on Blu-Ray. It is just a luxury item, but then so were DVD's at one point, so they're bound to find their way down the ladder. What's the saying "poverty today in the western world is going without a DVD player?".

Unless of course downloads and streaming movies hits off big. Which it won't, because we don't have the lines to sustain such a demand. Had the right people sorted out the cabling across the country then we may have been looking at streamers, but the lackadaisical, profiteering approach to the internet has scupperred and delayed those initiatives.

Back to films: I like the whole experience, that's the point of watching a film as opposed to reading a book or listening to a radio play. A better picture goes some way to do that. I'm still waiting for Disney to release it's back catalog - it's oldest films preferably as their expensive film amounts to several times the resolution of Blu-Ray and current technology - those are films that will look stunning on future formats for years to come.

Quit the techno fear, you're showing your ages.

Watched James Bond last night and was dissappointed...didn't understand a lot of it and the action scenes were too frequent and too unreal (I thought before Casino Royale they were saying they were gonna try and make Bond more real??). Also a lot of the time there was this shakey-camera-during-the-action-scenes going on which was just annoying, couldn't see what was happening half the time. In all not impressed.

Blu Ray Disc Player under £160

Pre-Order Blu Ray Films Under £20

Is it just me or do people presume that this stuff is really expensive? Ok the initial price is highish, £25 for a movie... but DVD's are about £3 - £5 Cheaper...

It was only a couple of years ago that DVDs were £25 on initial release. I think people overestimate how much Blu Ray costs
